Jack Casady Bass - Pickup Replacement/Upgrade

Black pickguards are out there or are not that hard to make. I believe @Koeda has made some. I don’t know if he’s selling them or not. The pickup is a little more difficult. If you want the low impedance pickup the stock creme colored one is pretty much it. If you want to go way off from stock I think a mini humbucker will fit but take some measurements. There must be an all black guitar mini-bucker out there. The bass will sound different though. Not necessarily better or worse, just different.

How about thinking outside the box for a moment and try something such as a TV Jones Thunder'Tron? Minor mods may be required.

The real question is what are you going to do with the impedance switch if you change the pickup?

As for a black JC pickup, my Royale Blue has it, the White JC’s have them. Keep looking one may surface for sale.
First thing I did when I got my black JC was to remove the PG, which I think makes it look cheap. And with the PG out of the picture, the cream-colored pup looks better too.
That’s why I bought the modded Bronco with JC electronics in it. I never see them come up and now I have them, with a much easier bass to play stretched to them

Tangential thought. It’s incredible how Epiphone have created one of ‘Gibson’s’ best basses. Why they haven’t made a Gibson version is beyond me
I’ve found it nearly impossible to find a JCB-1 pickup for sale online. Someone pointed me to the MAMA site that make a Humbucker as a replacement. Anyone have experience with this pickup? It also offers 3 different wiring options. Being electrically challenged, the descriptions (and differences between them) are lost on me. It is also not a low impedance like the JCB-1. What is the difference in performance between a low and a high impedance Humbucker?

The original Electar® pickup is characterized by very dark sounds and it is tremendously big and lacking in high frequencies, not versatile and unsuitable for modern amps. We designed a humbucker replacement perfectly fit for the cavity and for the original ring without modifying the instrument. Warm and powerful tone just like the original one but more complete and balanced in all frequencies. Dynamic and transparent, ideal for a semi-acoustic bass. In order to make our pickup working at its best, we recommend to replace the potentiometers and exclude the original circuit because it is designed for very low impedances. We offer 3 different wiring options and all components are available:
a) 250K CTS volume pot (7% tolerance) + 250K CTS tone pot (7% tolerance) + .047uF 400V Sprague Orange Drop capacitor, by excluding the rotary switch.
b) 250K CTS volume pot (7% tolerance) + 250K CTS tone push-pull pot (pickup split) + .047uF 400V Sprague Orange Drop capacitor, by excluding the rotary switch.
c) 250K CTS volume pot (7% tolerance) + 250K CTS tone pot (7% tolerance) + 1 .047uF 400V Sprague Orange Drop capacitor, by using the original rotary switch for series/split/parallel mode.

Total coincidence but just saw this ad and was curious about the pickup. I assume this is yours with the Hipshot Bridge and tuners. If so how did it compare to the stock pickup? Looks really nice!

This was a factory refurbished JCB. I have no experience with the JCB-1. But, I did upgrade the hardware, nut, luminous side markers and TI Powerbass strings. Lots of big warm wooly punch
