Double Bass Jack DeJohnette RIP.

As I posted in another tribute posting, this is my favorite KJ live performance.
KJ’s piano in the last few minutes is devastating.

A sad loss, for sure. That Charles Lloyd Forest Flower record was one of the first jazz records I really fell in love with. I saw him several times with the Standards Trio, and we saw his 2013 “AACM homecoming” with Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, Muhal Richard Abrams and Larry Gray that got released as Made In Chicago. One of my favorites was seeing him with Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding, and Leo Genovese. That was a really fine quartet. There’s a good video of a whole concert of that band in Paris.

Jack was one of my all time favorites. He was truly great, one of the masters. In the 80’s-90’s he was just unbelievable. The Keith Jarrett trio was huge for me and my cohort when I got to college in 1990. At that point Jack DeJohnette was THE cutting edge of great jazz drummers. Pat Metheny 80/81 and the first Michael Brecker album were in heavy rotation back then. Gateway with Dave Holland and John Abercrombie was also a big one for me. This is a tough one. RIP
