Ok another question for my Jackson Brothers n Sisters (since it went unasnswered in a main forum thread) if you would:

Jackson JS2 bass - stock Jackson Humbuckers:

I am finding the recorded sound comes off much different than live sound. I feel like I can easily get the bass zero'ed in to where I like it live. But no matter what I do (including swapping amps) I can't get rid of this percussive/hollow almost fake sounding tone when I play back a recording.

I thought maybe was just because it is not the most expensive bass. But my friend has a pretty high end Yamaha bass I noticed has the same type of sound. (he has a single and a split coil PUP set up)

Can anyone tell me what causes this? Is it the electronics, where I finger, set up? I notice both my friend and I tend to finger over top of the neck pick up - if that makes a difference? Just sucks because it sounds so crappy on a play back.

People say that the jackson pu's are better than emgs, but imo, with the Indian concert basses out now, I personally didnt care for the jackson pu's. The old Japanese p/j pu's with the je2000 pre sounds killer in my ears, always cuts through like a hot knife through butter.
I had an active JS3 model not too long ago and I got rid of it pretty quickly. I used to own a Japanese CMG with passive emg-HZs and I had tone for days, recording and in a live setting.
The CMG IMO is the best bang for your buck vs the newer concerts out now. And you can find them cheap, scored my old one for $150 at GC, they thought it was a JS2. Id say swap the pick ups but for the same price you can find a used CMG.

I would not say the OEM vs EMG is better. I would only say they sound different in the same bass.

i got one or 2 of mine especially my model4 that sounds that clanky, but i dont like it that way. thats too much. to me that is hollow and clanky and more pronounced when he uses the pick.

BUT, he may love that sound

and have the de-oxit handy The vol pot is always the one that scratches out.

I like my tone a a little more round if that makes sense. But still gritty. Think more Peace Sells bass tone instead of R.I.P

Hey can you guys post some sound clips of the Jackson Concert V?

Ill try to get some clips tomorrow if I have a chance. Ill do 3 clips, My PS5, My CMG and the Concert V. Dont forget my V doesnt have the original pickups or preamp in it.
Also, recorded tone and live tone is 2 different things for me. Right now Im tracking 2 bass inputs at the same time. 1 off my DI and another mic'd. The DI track is thinner sounding and I added a bunch of distortion to it and then blended it on to the cleaner track.

Thanks, Thats the PS5 with D'Addario nickles into a VT Bass pedal then a Hartke Bass Attack, then into a Hartke Kilo and a Ampeg 810.

My VT Bass dies the other day so I have to finish recording without it which totally sucks.
