Jaco clip causing some controversy

I agree with the latter. Also I can't stand Jaco's tone. To each his own.

The obnoxious mix in the OP's post is what killed it for me, when i listened to this mix someone else posted it was like night and day. I still don't like the tone but the playing is killer although there are a few spots I wish he really hadn't played what he did, the 16th motes were killer though, the overtone chords or whatever you call them are kind of obnoxious. There is an old saying, don't try to put everything you've ever learned into one solo and that seems to be the case here, at least for me.

I think the playing on this is absolutely fine, in the context of this piece of music it works well, it is busy but it works and I dont think a simple approach would have been nearly as good. That being said the music itself is really not my thing but that is just my own personal taste and in no way any reflection of the musicality of the performers.

I have to say the second most tragic thing about Jaco is that he played with Joni Mitchell. It's a shame that such wonderful bass playing is accompanied by her voice.

The Joni/Jaco pairing produced some amazing music; they were a perfect pairing. IMO.

A lot of people can't stand Joni Mitchell's voice. Others don't mind it as much, but find it very ill-suited for jazz. Personally, I think it lends a very unique character that helped create some very interesting out-of-the-box music.

Of course, I agree. Obviously others do not see it as interesting, even if they see it as out-of-the-box.

And yet another reason why we who aren't in love with Jaco, for whatever reason, are wrong. It's not the clip. It's not necessarily the tone. And it's not his obvious skill, talent, dedication, passion, etc...The music doesn't move us or speak to us the same way it does to you. Why can it not be that simple? Why assume this is the only work of his we've ever seen or heard? And if it was, why isn't it enough? Is it sub-standard or an inadequate representation?...It doesn't do anything for me. Sorry if that's not enough for some of you but that's all it is. It is that simple.

Well OK, first time I've seen this. I will say that Joni looks happy with what she's hearing, it sounds tight and it has that definite Jaco signature sound to it........what were you expecting to sound like ?. While I am a huge Max Bennet and L.A. express fan that played this originally, this is just different, as one might expect from a different bunch of musicians and there interpretation of this song. its not worse, just different.

I watched this a couple of months ago (the performance in the OP). What stood out to me was the look on Jaco's face at the end. It makes me think Brecker gave him a look, and it wasn't good.

I find it really pretentious that some people think they know better than Joni Mitchell how her music should be played. If she was happy who really cares what some arm chair quarterback sitting in his basement thinks? You don’t like it? Go put on some Brittney Smears and Justin Beaver or some equally generic pablum for the masses.
