Jaco clip causing some controversy

If anyone wants to know what Joni thought of Jaco, there is a fascinating remembrance she wrote for Musician Magazine. Joni Mitchell Library - The Life and Death of Jaco Pastorius: Musician Magazine, December 1987

Basically, she loved him for his uniqueness. That was what she was looking for. She appreciated and understood aspects of his personality and temperament others didn't. Then the drugs took over and as Joni puts it, "there wasn't any real parting point between us; we stopped playing together because Jaco didn't play well anymore".

One bassist's genius playing is another bassist's self-indulgent wankfest. It's a taste thing, and thus there is no objective right or wrong.

Completely agree, unimaginable (for me anyway) talent displayed but it's just not music for me.

Earlier on this thread the name Max Bennett came up and because I wasn't much aware of his doings I checked the man and found out the huge career he had. In regards to this discussion I admit preferring his comping on Joni Mitchell's Miles of Aisles live album compared to that romping on the OP's clip.

That Max Bennett interview makes me wonder just how much money those guys were making in the studios that going out on big tours with a major artist who could pay top dollar was a cut in pay. Those were the days, eh?

That was the first JM album I bought way back in the day. I learned a lot about alternate tunings on guitar, and dulcimer techniques from Joni.

I loved what Jaco did with Joni but I also love what Bennett did with her, Court & Spark is one of the most perfect albums, every bass note is placed perfectly. The bass playing on that album is sublime.
