Jaco Patorius Bass Method by Ray Peterson

Yeah, this book isn't a "How to be a Jaco clone." book. There is real meat here.
It is a book that presents musical tools, used by all top musicians, on any instrument, and some ways how to use those tools. And then another section presenting how Jaco used them, by providing analysis and transcriptions of his work.

This is book is very enjoyable on several levels. When I first got it, I enjoyed reading it and hearing about the authors interactions with Jaco. I enjoyed reading it so much that I read through the whole book first then went back and started working on the bass parts. It also inspired me to learn more about Jaco, so I went to the library and picked up Bill Milkowski's book "Jaco".

great book that i went through a few years ago. it teaches from jaco thru ray, who is a monster on the bass in his own right and a great teacher and guy to boot. he is a professional bassist here in the city and has done some great jazz rock and blues over the years. the analysis of the tunes and interpretation is great and his transcriptions are fantastic.
best

Jaco is not a must for everyone. I spent 5 years playing bass before I even heard of Jaco. Jaco was fantastic, but being a Jaco clone does not appeal in the least to me. What appeals to me, however, is learning from the sources that Jaco learned from, which were mostly from other instruments.
Sorry but learning a player's style doesn't mean you want to be a clone. You can create your own style from it.

1. Ancient thread.

2. When I read the author's explanation about it 8 years ago, it made a lot more sense to me, as you can see in my subsequent posts.

3. I still think there are too many Jaco clones out there.

Well I guess it demonstrates how important Jaco is for the bass world. ;)

I still think there are too many Jaco clones out there.

So, if I think there's too many Jamerson clones out there. does that mean people shouldn't study Jamerson?

It's a personal musical journey. People should freely study who and what they want without having to explain or justify it to random and inconsequential people. Having said that, I suppose it's OK for those random people to feel however they want.

Hey All,
As there seems to be a certain lack of understanding here regarding the Jaco book in question, I'd like to clarify things a little.

Thank you Ray!
This is a priceless book! I only just now learned about it and at first the title didn't grab me just because there are so many other Jaco transcription books around - but this one is so much more!

As a teacher, this is possibly the first book I would recommend any bass student to read.
Just the excercise with triads in different inversions alternating in tritones is worth the price of admission - really forces one to learn the instrument with the full range and voice-leading and absolute "hipness"!

Track 05 - Alternating 2nd Inversion with Root Position triads a TRITONE away
Track 06 - Alternating Root Position with 2nd Inversion triads a TRITONE away
