Part of why there is a divide - between those who have just heard the odd MP3 and don't "get" Jaco - and those of us who were around at the time , saw what he was doing with the humble bass guitar and were amazed!

That's a good point. I was lucky enough to see him live with Weather Report.

If you weren't around before Jaco, you just don't have the context of what he changed.

From jazz to rock to funk to soul to freakin' TV commercials, his influence is pervasive.

Then you have those of us who weren't there, but know our music history. Whether you like his music or not, he changed everything for bass. I'm totally blow away by his unique approach to such a new instrument.

So it was Jamerson, then Jaco... who's the next in line to totally innovate on the instrument?

I'm not trying to imply that I know something you don't. But, for some of us who were playing then and paying attention it was like the wind changed, the colors got brighter, and you got a new rulebook.

You can't imagine what that felt like if you weren't there.
