Not what you think! The bass line is played by Josef Zawinul on a synthesizer, Jaco is playing harmonics during the first section and probably used a good deal of compression and quite a bit of reverb. The places where it sounds like effects on bass are Jaco and Josef playing in unison. They are doing the same thin on Teen Town.
