James Jameron's Funk Machine - Wrong Year

I remember the B-15 from the ad as I think it was the first time I saw (or paid attention) to the old flip top.

BTW, here's the photo from the Bass Player ad:

Here's a great shot of the flip top with JJ, Jr., with Jamerson Tribute Bass #000:

#000 belonged to James Jr. correct?

Correct. It was donated to him as a thank you for his assistance and overall approval so we could move forward with the project.

Just like with the Jaco Sig Bass, the Family also received a royalty for each bass sold.

Thanx Miles’tone!
I like the handle name(miles is one my big influence in music....he lived in my neighborhood and I always use to see his white Ferrari Dino parked in in 79street rirverside park garage) my pops would go over to his crib and Miles son Erin DAVIS used to come sleep over)

I’m buying one of these bass this week 63 All Original P-Bass(sunburst) or 66 all original Lake placid blue (both have Brazilian Rosewood finger board )

Yes, the Funk Machine was from the very late '64-66 period. Most likely a CBS bass. Imagine that! ;-)

I own a Fender/CBS '66 P and I got it for less than if it were a 'collectable vintage' early '65 Fender. Same exact bass made in the same factory by the same people (other than the Fullerplast base layer) over that time period -

Glad this thread was revived.

I had not before heard of "Black Beauty," the 57 P.

Anyone know what recordings were made with this bass?

So hard to say. He went electric in roughly early '61, so it would be on some of the earlier, obscure stuff. The first tune credited to him at Motown is said to be "Way Over There" by The Miracles, in 1959. On upright though. The first electric track is anybody's guess. And it could have been the '57 or his first sunburst/rosewood '61, which he's seen using live in '61 with Jackie Wilson. So the '57 was either home, or likely already stolen.
