If the bass is played the right way, it is played from your heart! There are a lot of current bassists who concentrate on being tacticians and lose the human element (heart & soul) of being a bass player. Mr. Jamerson was spot on with his statement, and I repeated the same statement to others prior to reading the article! I also found it interesting that Motown would hold up production to wait for him to come off the road instead of using another bassist!
i agree with you: it was nice to hear that from a player who is so well respected. "playing from the heart" is a simple, elegant bit of advice. and i agree with you about some players who appear/sound technically proficient but who lack that 'soul' delivery at which jamerson was so special. all music, on any instrument, is better, IMO, when played from the heart! thanks for sharing the article.
