Jamiroquai deeper underground sound

not your typical 'quai thread. i've always loved the sound on this song, but is it effected bass or synth or both? the phrasing implies bass but there are some octave jumps that sound keyboardy...i'm not sure if its zender as he left midway thru the recording of the album.

has anyone any info? or tabs even?

It's been awhile since I've listened to it, but my recollection was that it was bass through a boss multi set to octave fuzz (no doubt with some post processing as well) and possibly doubled by an actual synth too.

The Octafuzz setting on the Octavius Squeezer got me close, especially with a few minor tweaks to the patch. Can't help you with tabs, though I believe the verses are in C# blues after that long build up, which I don't think the bass plays on.

An octave down with a gated fuzz above it works. If you've got those two you just need a blender.

Zender left before the recording of the album "Deeper Underground" appeared on. (I don't remember the name of that album)
The songs was first used on the "Godzilla" soundtrack.

EDIT: It appeared on "Synkronized", the album with Nick Fyfe's (spelling?) appearance

Everything I've read thus far has said that Stuart left "during" the recording of Synkronized, not before. Unfortunately, that means that we don't really know what songs on that album were him, and which ones were Nick Fyffe

I don't think Zender is on any of it - they had a proper bitchy, stroppy falling-out. If he did start work on the album I don't think they used his tracks. None of it sounds like him either.

i think the riff is doubled up by synth and electric guitar.. every now and then the bass does a low note or 2 seperate from the riff that you can hear quite quietly.. it sounds very low and maybe slightly distorted.

That's actually not true... There is even some footage of Zender playing with the band on Top of the Pops that tune... It was just released as a single, I know because I have it, ha ha ha.

I have the feeling that every track that has synth bass on it on that album was originally recorded by Stu Zender (such as Supersonic, Canned Heat, and maybe some others). But the question remains, I hope someday we'll get to hear his version of those tracks. peace.

Synth bass hands down.

You can here the oscillators modulating due to tuning, plus there's a fair amount of glide/portamento going on in the chorus.

Maybe the breakdown is some kind of overdriven bass i.e. boss overdrive with bass right up, but i'd vote that its a blend of sine/triangle wave with a severely scooped square wave on top..

The low bass note (from a real bass) that you hear is nothing but string rattle sampled..

Crowther Prunes and Custard gets me pretty close.

This was Zender's last release with the band, he left halfway through Synkronized, and they redid all his tracks with Nick Fyffe and Synths. That's my understanding of it anyhow.
