I saw Magma play at Bromley College in 1974. An awesome, jaw-dropping experience for me. I distinctly remember that Jannick Top was playing a fretless bass for this gig, as it was so unusual for the time; the only other fretless bass I had seen before this was the one Rand Forbes is playing on the cover of The United States Of America eponymous album (see below).
I think this explains some of Jannick Top's crazy vibrato playing (which was something of an inspiration for me) that you can hear on Magma's Inedits album, which was recorded during this period.
