I've got a simple solution. Newsted doesn't use a sansamp...he uses the real deal, a cranked SVT.

I can get a close sound with my Boss GT-6B, that has a preamp section that you can set to model the Ampeg SVT head and the 810E speaker cab, you can also set other effects like overdrive too, for an aggressive sound.

Might be worth a look around for a used one, you can get a good sound patch after a bit of playing around, though the pre-set patches aren't brilliant.

On his bass it appears he uses the neck pick-up, well live anyway.

That era Metallica "bass tone" is one of the easiest there is to get with a graphic eq. You simply take the far left slider and pull it all the way to the bottom, then take the far right slider and push it all the way to the top. Then take the remaining sliders and form a straight line between the 2. When the bass is completely neutered, you've got it.

I don't know why they bothered to put a bass track on those records at all. That's not a slam on Newsteds playing. It is a slam on whoever thought that mix sounded good.

test drive the MXR M-80 and dial in a bit of dirt. I think it sounds dead-on.

Both Jason Newsted and Rob Trujillo both used our SansAmp Classic and XXL pedals when they were in Metallica. I think when it comes to getting someone else's sound it's much more about the playing than the gear.
