Jay Turser Mods for Canadians

Hey Guys,
I've seen quite a few threads about SX and all of the great mods done. But very few on the Jay Turser Fender clones. Living in Canada, SX double+ in price, making them not so cheap :spit: or desirable. But we do have Jay Turser's for very reasonable prices :hyper:
If anybody has any kind of information about drop-in replacements on these bad boy's it would be appreciated. So far I lined up the bridge holes on a model in the store ($139) with a Bad Ass II. I'd love to see a new neck on one, does anybody have any info on the pockets?
Canadians like to mod too! :D

you can find used 300 dollar mexifenders all over the place.....kinda makes the clones redundant.....i don't know if i'd want something that was built entirely with a cheap price in mind.....starting off with something decent, and modding those seems to make more sense.....

I don't know Jim, I just picked up a Jay Turser JTB-401 (the '50s Precision clone) and it's a pretty nice bass. It sounds real good (though the one single coil pickup hums like a swarm of bees). The neck is really nice, with nice Maple and perfectly dressed frets. Not a bad deal for a cheap bass. I paid a little more than $200US for a new one. I would say it could hold its own with a MIM Fender.

Sorry but I'm not after a mexican fender, I just want to mod out a $100 Jay Turser Bass using parts I have laying around. Which is pretty much everything but a neck. Plus that extra $200 saved can go towards liquor and easy women :D

Julian-I just have to say-you Canadians rock! :bassist:

What I can offer for an actual opinion is of course change the pickup (maybe take a shot on some used Fenders to keep the price down). Also as far as a neck goes, I had an Essex where I was able to swap a Fender neck no problem-for that you may have to once again take a (maybe a used Squier neck or something like that?).

I bought a JTB401 a few months ago. I had my local luthier make a bone nut for it, and I bought some Tusq saddles for it. (I have also bought new pots and capacitor which I will put in after my amp arrives in Aug, so I can compare the stock and new pot tones). I also bought a vintage Fender bridge cover which finishes this fine looking bass off well. Don't bother with the matching vintage pick up cover if you are tempted - it gets in the way of playing so I found it a waste of $20 CND.

The bass is well made, and the pickup is strong, deep and throaty. The one in my bass is very quiet. The knobs seem a tiny bit rough, and the treble adjust is only effective for 1/3 of the turn - thus the reason for the new pots which will smooth things up and give a better graduated dial in.

The neck is one of the best things about the bass, so you won't need to replace it.

People have switched the p'up with SD and Fenders, and ended up replacing the JT stock pup, so don't waste your time thinking you have to get a new pup because the bass is inexpensive.

Jeese, with the replace this and that suggestions here, why buy it at all if you are going to make it into some other bass? bonk...

Here's my take on it: #7 http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=619077
