Jazz and Stingray pickups in one bass?

Hi all,

My main bass is a bit of a beater and I love him dearly. It's an american Jazz copy and it does the job quite nicely for me, despite weighing nearly 12lbs with its swamp ash body. Luckily, I'm a big guy!

Anyways, i've been thinking of buying a Stingray - either a Ray34 or a used American one. But money is tight and I thought - whay not just fit a Musicman-style humbucker to the Jazz?

I overlaid 2 images in Photoshop and made sure they were scaled to the same size by matching the nut and 12th fret. This seemed to indicate that there is room on one bass for all three pickups in their original positions!

Any comments on the merits/problems of this arrangement?

I'm all over TB on this one. The Ray 34 is a killer deal for the money. If you like the idea of a J/MM setup, SBMM doesn't offer it, and you'll be looking at a used USA EBMM. The MM pickup will be significantly hotter than your stock J, and you will notice the volume difference. Of course, you can change out the stock J for a hotter J that will match the MM, and still spend less than buying another bass. Seymore Duncan, DiMarzio and Bartolini would be great choices.

Double Js are very rare. When I put one on one of my basses, I had to have it custom made, because I could only find like half a dozen options on the market, much less would you be able to find a MM style version.

You could try to have one custom made with MM style poles and a MM style wind, but the problem is finding a cover for it.

I know of one pickup builder that can CNC any custom cover, but it won't be cheap.

I would hardly ever disagree with you. Except I had an ibby with the j / mm (duncan designed) and the single coil was hotter than the MM in parallell and series. Probably just the pups. I had them wired passive vol vol tone with 500k's.

ive had two passive basses with stock stingray pickups (a mid 80's ray and a 5 string sub) and when wired parallel they were not hotter than a j. the sub wired in series was louder than a j pickup, but not in parallel as its intended to be used.

Heard on here before of combining 2 js and modifing the covers, wired in series. how do you think that would work?
