Recently last year, I decided to email my friend who left the school. He’s older than me, so we didn’t talk until he noticed I was leaving the Jazz Band program for French. We had a concert and he brought his Jazz Bass. A beautiful orange with a green Pickguard. I had the opportunity to play it, but chose the upright instead. That was a terrible mistake. Later, I emailed him over the summer and he answered back. I had gotten into the 1970 Ibanez 2030 bass ever since my younger friend got a 1983 Fender, which is actually a 2008 that looked like a 1967. So I asked my older friend: “What year is your bass?” He answers: “Mine is a 1964 Fender.” The at blew me away. Especially because I had the chance to play it but didn’t. That gave me an idea.
I looked up when the Jazz Bass came out. 1960. Okay. I got to work looking one up. $40 thousand dollars. I told myself “forget it, man! If I can’t buy my own vintage Jazz Bass, I’ll make one.” I’m still gathering parts for it. I have the tug bar, which was used to rest your fingers and play with your thumb. I also need the stacked knobs, three strap buttons, and the vintage bridge to get this right. The photos below are from the $40k bass on Reverb.
