Since the Jazz is probably the most copied bass, I will express my ideas about this model. Someday, if one of you builders could consider making a jazz type bass with the following mods.-- A jazz w/neck @ 1-9/16" width at the nut instead of 1-1/2". This would would attract more players who think the neck is too thin, but still be fast. -- Make the body out 1" core of Alder and a thick 3/4" top swamp Ash. This would give the bass the best of tones being that Alder is punchy, extra warm, and balanced. Then the Ash top would bring out the snap and extra growl. Next, I would ever so slightly reduce the size of the body by maybe a 1/16" of the outer edges/form. Not enough to notice by sight, but only notice when held and played. When companies reduce the body by a noticable amount, it is never really super popular -always dividing players comfort zones. I know there will be players who think the jazz is great like it is -I understand as I like the jazz very much now. However, since their are more than enough standard jazzes to go around, I am trying to give a builder a new take on a great standard. Maybe when the economy is better, someone will give it a go.

I fall into the "I think the jazz is fine the way it is" category. I don't think the extra 1.5mm at the nut would be something that really appeals to me. There's certainly nothing wrong with your suggestions though. I'm not familiar enough with all the different clones to know if there is already a jazz bass that incorporates those ideas. Why don't you try and build one yourself? Or you could probably get one custom made for you for a reasonable price.
