Jazz/fusion fretless players???

Well I bought that Mark Egan album (where he uses the Pentabuzz) and that album has some good fretless bass lines goin on. For the most part its kind of "Pop" jazz (WHICH I HATE! 
) but there are a few good tunes on there where Egan ripps it up with his Pedulla Pentabuzz (Why can't my Penta sound like that!?!?!????
) Good stuff for the most part minus that Kenny G style crap. Although his slides get kind of old after a while....
Another album I bought for the hell of it is Larry Coryell Count's Jam Band Reunion. DAMN, this Kai Eckhardt cooks man! He plays both fretted and fretless I think and damn that cat can play. This is the kind of fusion jazz I dig.
Alain Caron I heard was a real pompus ass, haha don't ask me...Bunny well just curious if he had some more work out there. I did not like the stuff he did with Chick. Kazumi's album kind of rocked but it sounded funny, his bass was all middy with no body at all.
I am interested in Kai Eckhardt's work. Can anyone suggest an album he plays on where he really goes off?

Ralphe Armstrong did some fine fretless bass work with Jean Luc Ponty plus his inventive use of efx make him a player worth checking out.
i still dont have much kai eckhardt. i do have a video of him playing with mclaughlin and gurtu that rips. hes playing a double neck with fretted and fretless 4 string necks.
if you like that tone center style fusion you'll dig the gong albums i mentioned earlier. almost all the fusion varney has put out on t.c. has been good except for the larry coryell,tom coster album that came out at the same time the first vital tech tones cd came out.
frank gambale's coming to your senses cd has some great fretless playing on it from ric fierabracci. he plays pedulla thunderbasses. i saw that band live with otmaro ruiz on keys and it ripped.

Not at all - I've met Alain on a number of occasions and he's been really friendly every time. In clinic he was great with everyone's questions and stood around chatting for ages afterwards. In concert he played his ass off and was friendly and funny between songs...

Oh, and can I second the recommendation for Ric Fierabracci with Frank Gambale - the live double official bootleg CD is incredible. Ric is a true modern fretless great, and can't stay as little known as he is for long - check out the CD, available from www.frankgambale.com - amazing stuff...

Anyway I have no more $$$ to spend on CD's so no more ear training for me! hahahaha. I want to check out Gambale w/Ric on bass but maybe next month. Right now I'm listening to Egan and Eckhart which is a handfull now. Good stuff to soak your mind in.

The bassist from Spyro Gyra...which one? There have been about 20 different guys!

I just might try to pick up that John McLaughin live album, I saw that the other night but its $18. $ tight now, darn it! I heard he goes off on the live cd.....very curious....

I'm not too sure Stanley plays electric fretless bass...at least not way back when. I recall an interview when Clarke was asked to bring his fretless to a particular recording session(an Al Jarreau album). Clarke said he didn't need to play fretless 'cause he played upright(record producer told him to bring it!).

Hmmmm, I thought Stanley played an acoutic fretless bass (not upright) on Rite of Strings w/DiMeola? I guess its a doublebass then....
the stuff he's done with the Yellowjackets were good. But I just recently bought his solo album, Red Heat, and I hated it. I'm a fan of Jimmy Haslip, but I hate smooth jazz!

Some of it I can tolerate if there is a good player but most of the times it makes me go to bed. I also bought a Jimmy album years ago called ARC and it was terrible. Never heard the Yellowjackets but I heard it was pop.

While Red Heat is not particularly 'dangerous', I wouldn't call it 'Smooth' either - it's Jimmy re-exploring his latin roots, combining a lot of latin rhythms with his other influences... smooth jazz, or instrumental soul as as I guess it should really be called, uses a lot of similar musical ideas, but not with the depth that Jimmy does, IMHO.

...John Patitiucci used to do a lot of fusion with Chick Corea Electric Band...but now he does a lot more Afro-Cuban (upright bass). But that is still good to check out. Michael Brecker is on some of his recent albums.
not necesarrily the flashiest player in the tenure of spyro gyra's bassists but the only era of that band i like is when oscar cartaya was on bass.
scott ambush deserves whatever accolades he gets. he's bad! the live version of shaker song from road scholars smokes. his fretless playing on that is worth checking out.

Ambush, I guess, is hardly the 'new guy' anymore. I dare say he has held the SG bass chair longer than any of the previous players.
Cartaya was hot; Hell, I dug Stoney(City Kids is possibly my favorite SG record), too.

I've known Scott for a long time. Opinions are cool but to say "he thinks he's all bad"...where the heck did that come from?
On the "new guy" tip, Scott's been with SG for a long time... kind of like calling Jason Scheff the new guy in Chicago
