Fender or Squier PJ bass is Good choice, BUT i think New Ibby SR750/650 is GREAT choice.

If the OP wants to rock something more distinctive, here's another option to join yours on the Alt-list.
This Gibson sounds great and certainly is underrepresented on the bandstand.

I agree. When you rock twice as hard as anyone else, it's vitally important to have two absolutely identical necks on one bass.

OP, you shouldn't restrict yourself to those two models only, especially if you're just starting learning the instrument. Try many and then make an informed choice.

On the Joe Satriani DVD, 'Satchurated', Joe's Bassist, Allen Whittman, is playing a Lake Placid Blue P Bass just like the one in the JWF's picture. Looks sharp!

I've known Alan for years, that P he used w/ Sach is a MIM with a Nordstrad pup & Hipshot bridge. He didn't want to take his vintage stuff on the road.

Honestly, go to some decent music store and try as many basses as needed with as many amp's as possible. Pick the one you like best. It's your playing style that makes your own sound with any instrument. Pick the one that pleases your own ears and hands the best. And stop worrying what other people might think.

I own both but prefer the feel and tonal range of the Jazz.
