Jazz or Precision?

Hey Alex, welcome to Talkbass. We put the 'funk' in dys-funk-tional family. (Sorry gang, I couldn't resist that.)
Can't go wrong with a P Bass. (I have both, and use both, playing Blues/Classic Rock)
As for the TBers who suggest a P Bass with a P/J pickup configuration, their advice is probably a little better than mine. And not only that, it's FREE!

Here's a Mexican-made Standard such as can be found used with ease on your local craigslist for $275-$350.

Lastly, a used Squier II currently listed on the "Indland Empire, California" Craigslist for $90.

Amazingly, any of these basses will get the job done!

I was thinking Jag as well, particularly if you find that you prefer the neck of a Jazz but the sound of a P. PJ pickups but a bit of a different look from all the P basses out there.

Do you like slapping? If you do, get a J. If not, get a P as the bassists in your favorite band use P.
Of course, get a PJ is a solution.
As SanDiegoHarry said, get a used - you can just sell it for about what you paid when you want to change to another bass. Today you play pop funk, maybe one day you play jazz/ blues/ R&B ...whatever you choose, you may change your preference as your style of music/ taste may change later as you have just started for 8 months (in fact this happens to bassists who have played bass for decades.... LOL)

OP, I mowed about a million lawns to get my first "real" bass. I was in punk and hardcore bands. The choice for me wasn't even really a choice, it was a given. Pretty much every bass player that I admired played a P. Not saying you oughta get a P, but it is cool just thinking about my first good bass. I've been through a lot of basses since, but, I've always had at least one P bass and it's usually my main bass.

1981, I'm about 15. I grew into the bass eventually, ha.

Anyways, I believe that a Modded Mark Hoppus Jazz bass with a j pickup in the bridge will do for you.

I own one and the reversed p pickup sound great.

I don't think you can beat Mike Dirnt's sound for anything close to that style of music. Do what he does, or the guy from Alice in Chains (Spector). I don't play either style of music, I don't have a horse in this race, I'm just saying what grabs me, an unapologetic sucker for good sounding pop. I AM the masses as far as that goes and the masses seem to have preferred those two ballpark sounds for that vein of music.
