I'm looking into getting my first upright. I found an upright bass on Craigslist for $700. The seller says its marked down from $1800. My concern is that it's setup for jazz. I already know I will have to get it setup again. But I wanted to know if there was any structural differences in jazz basses and rockabilly basses. I do eventually want to add on some type of pickup system and I've heard basses with good acoustics tend to have feedback problems.

Double Bass Jazz setup v rockabilly setup

Some of the modern basses marketed to rockabilly players are made a little more "heavy-duty", both for the purposes of resisting abuse/stunts and for minimal feedback resistance in amplification. Blast Cult is known for the latter, and as a result has a less boomy acoustic sound. But in all reality, a bass is a bass in and of itself, with the setup being the key factor for sound and style. The setup revolves around strings, string height (action), soundpost placement, etc. Be very very cautious of a craigslist bass, especially for 700. "Marked down from 1800"? Call me skeptical. If you can, find someone who knows about basses to come with you to check it out. Maybe even a Talkbasser?
