Jazz workshops in NYC?

I had plans to take a local jazz workshop here in Bucks County PA, but they fell through.

Looking at some in NYC now and was curious what some may recommend that take place on a weekend?

Many years ago (as in the early 2000's) I attended some at a place in Manhattan whose name I forget...may have been "x institute of technology" or something like that.

I think you're talking about Musician's Collective. They mostly put performance ensembles together, as opposed to actual workshop type things. You might also want to check out New York Jazz Workshop Music School for Jazz Studies | New York Jazz Workshop or New York Jazz Academy Invalid Link Removed.

Ok.. So signed up for New York Jazz Academey on Long Island. Long drive for me and I'd have preferred the Manhattan location but I dont think that one would have worked due to my gig schedule.

Sent a recording to Javier of me playing to a couple of tunes and he felt I'd be suited for the more "advanced class".

Should be interesting..the material for this class includes Donna Lee which is something that I think is probably several levels above where my playing is at...

Don't make the mistake I did when I was an undergrad in music school:

I started at Berklee just a couple years after Jaco's solo album dropped, so all the bass players at school felt compelled to learn "Donna Lee". I too dutifully shed the head until I could play it in my sleep at any tempo.

For whatever that was worth. Which it turns out wasn't much. It was probably two or three years after I graduated from college than anyone even bothered to call "Donna Lee" at a gig...and, what the hell? they didn't want the bass to play the melody!?!?! At which point I realized -- in a panic, mind you -- that I'd never looked at the changes to "Donna Lee"!!!

Don't be that guy.
