Jazz

I have not read it but looking at it on Amazon, it looks like an informative book but not too deep in songs to cover. The chapters seem to contain information on the style of jazz and bebop and it talks about the bassists involved with creating the sounds. Hopefully someone else chimes in who HAS read it and can let us know more about it.

I guess I've "used" The Jazz Bass Book more than anyone, so I'll chime in ;) It sounds like you are looking for general instruction, styles, technique, and reading for jazz electric bass. IMO, The Jazz Bass Book is not what you're looking for—It's more about the players, history and development of jazz double bass styles from the early 1920's through the 1960's. For electric technique, reading, and electric jazz styles, I would check out material by Ed Friedland, Jason Raso to see if their books are what you are looking for. Good luck!

Hi John. Thanks for the reply. It sounds like you wrote a great book though.

The Evolving Bassist by Rufus Reid is a classic. Once you get through that, The Improvisor's Bass Method by Chuck Sher is a good next step. There are numerous books on walking bass lines--those by Ed Fuqua and Ed Friedland come highly recommended.
I just purchased Ed Friendlands Walking bass because I use his Bass Method as well and it's a lot of fun with the audio.
