JB sez Hello

Hey to all you out there in Low-End Land. I live and work in a small coastal-region Texas town and spend most of my free time in pursuit of the Bass Truth. Moved back to this town after a thirty-year absence for work elsewhere about two years ago, and haven't tried to find much live action just yet. Spending most of my daily playtime in bass and music studies, trying to get back my theory, sight-reading, etc. prior to gigging. Just something I've waited far too long to do, so that's what's going on for me right now. I like TB and refer to it frequently when trying to learn something relative to all things Bass.

Welcome back to the Coastal area of Texas. Grew up on the Houston Ship Channel near Baytown now live on a small lake in East Texas. Something about being near water....

Work took me up North, but, I two got to come home just before I retired. Not planning on crossing the Red river any time soon.

Hey Malcom, how's the live gigging thing going up in the Piney Woods? Are you doing anything, or just keeping up with practice?

Not a lot of musician or band choices in my area between Houston and Corpus Christi. A fair amount of drunks and hacks plucking away in a few dingy, faded bars, but not a very big spread of actual musicians. I'm hoping that there's more that I just haven't met yet, but the pickings aren't exactly grand. It seems that the relatively few better-grade musicians are already locked into place in a small number of bands.

Our neck of the woods is full of musicians. I think being close to Shreveport and the old Louisiana Hay Ride radio show lot of older musicians live in this area.

Know what you mean about the few dingy faded bars. Don't go that way anymore. Don't like to drive after dark. Play rhythm guitar in an old classic Country band where we normally do 4 to 5 gigs a month. Mostly nursing and or retirement homes - all afternoon gigs with some fairs, bar-b-ques, etc. thrown in. Then church. Play Praise on Sundays at our church and then go to a small church right out side of town and furnish music for their service. Both bands keep me busy enough, not looking for any more.

You mentioned practice. I don't do a lot of practice on scales, chord tones, etc. it's all on specific songs these days. Been with the Country band since 2000 so it is the same ole 50 songs over and over. Been playing Praise long enough to where I seldom get a "new" song.

Lot of those good ole boy bands get by without a bass. Ask around. That is how I got with the bands I play with. Once you mention you play bass they ask; "Can you play from fake chord"? If you can your in.

Good luck.

You know, I didn't think about looking into the musicians playing in faith-based environments. Have to do that. Sounds like you've got your hands full playing, that's awesome!
