JBL K130 drivers; Treasure or Trash?

Hi there!

I'm a owner of two very old (probably from the late 70's) vintage JBL drivers and I don't know what to do with them. The model is K130 (15", 125W, 8ohms), both still in working order, and as far as I can tell they've never been reconed. So what are these, treasure or trash? Originally they were mounted in a horn-loaded cabinet but have been used as PA-speakers in a normal BR cabinet. I can't find much info on them on the internet (besides some basic technical info), but if I can't get these sold I'll probably build a pair of PA/Stage monitors out of them...

I think those were the guitar 15's at the time the K140's were popular for bass. I love the K140's , very sweet tone for bass. If you go to the JBL web site, you can probably find some info on them.

Put 'em up on CL. They're great for pedal steel and the pedal steel players know it.

I wouldn't consider them treasure personally... but with some old speaker designs you can just about bet there is someone out there who will. So do further research, methinks. JBL definitely has rung a lot of chimes over the decades.

+1 I've seen D130s and K130s with good original cones going for $150-200. Treasure!

I used to have a JBL cab with 2 K140's. Too bassy for a lot of contemporary stuff..would prefer 10's myself..don't quote me but I think that the K130's were used in the old Fender Showman guitar cabs?

I'd guess you could probably snag $100-$200 a piece from the right buyer. eBay would make it easier to find buyers but entails more work. Just leave 'em on craigslist and see if you get any bites.

I've had some Electrovoice 400w 15 P.A. drivers on ebay for a while..not had much luck with them.

Ok, so I found some tech info on these;

Fs: 40Hz, Qts: 0,25, Qms: 4, Qes: 0,27, Sensitivity: 102dB, Vas: 297.3L, Eff: 6.7, Pe: 125W, Xmax 0.76, Re: 6.3, Le 0.6, Sd: 0.09, Bl: 18, Mms: 60, Flux: 1.2

They go low (Fs 40Hz), have an incredible sensitivity of 102dB (!), but that Vas=297L is a lot, and they only take 125W RMS (250W peak). Maybe I'll just pair these with two of these; Link Removed and use them as a spare PA-speakers...

They actually don't go low, and they especially don't go low and loud. The .76mm excursion limits them to about 15 watts before farting out in the low end. The 102dB sensitivity is realized at the cost of low end response, which chokes off around 200 Hz. That's perfectly OK for their intended application, electric guitar, but for electric bass, not so much.
