Well although it's not a .22 LR, they make a .380 LCP that's compact and nice. However, I have to say that my main intention was just to reinforce the notion that the Jennings does not have a good reputation. My sister's father-in-law has one and when we went out to fire it, all it did was malfunction.

Phoenix Arms also makes a nice .22 about that size that seems to have a decent reputation, although I've never fired one.

Just some thoughts.

Well, getting back to what the OP wants, a quick Google search indicates the Beretta Bobcat, and Walther TPH as good quality .22lr pocket pistols. I have no experience with either, and quite frankly consider such guns to be pointless trinkets even for plinking.

You really shouldn't get anything less than a .50AE Dessert Eagle. Anything less is an insult to your manhood. Secondly, putting CLP in your dishwasher and filling it up with guns is a sure fire way to prevent jams in most firearms. Lastly, if you are looking for a good paperweight I recommend an MXR M80.

Those can be really finicky, but they can be made to work. With the price the bulk .22LR is going for around here, $100 for 500 rounds, it's hard to justify purchasing a firearm in that caliber unless you have some already. Of course, the going rate for those Bryco/Jennings models is somewhere around $49.

If you want a small self defense gun go with a Ruger LCP, S & W Bodyguard, or the new Glock 42. .380 is a far better self defense cartridge than a .22. And personally I have my reservations about .380 in winter with penetration against heavy clothing.

If you absolutely can't deal with the recoil of a .380 (those little guns snap). Ruger makes a small .22 revolver in the LCR, they also offer a .22 mag version (far far better). Ruger also offers a fairly small semi-auto in the SR-22 which is a real reliable plinker and plenty small. I've got one and love it.

The Beretta Bobcat is another option but they are real hard to find right now. Taurus makes a knockoff of the Beretta, stay away, I work part time in a gun shop and the Taurus has proved fairly unreliable. I'll echo the comments about the Jennings, if you use it as a paperweight, it will jam your paper.:D

One other comment, when people ask about the .22 for self defense, my response is, it's better than nothing or the .45 in your safe at home. BUT, Ronald Reagan was shot with one when he was 80 years old and didn't know he was shot for an hour. What are the odds it's going to stop some meth upped bad guy? Not good.

I appreciate your input, but the first sentence of this thread says it's for a "cheap plinker/fun gun," and nothing about self-defense. I have an LCP.

I like the "if you use it as a paperweight, it will jam your paper" part, made me laugh.

Check out the Ruger SR-22, it's about the smallest semi-suto .22 that is a truly functional plinker. And they are the most reliable of any of the full slide .22s
