I was a student of Jerry Jemmott in the 1980’s. He lived on Amsterdam Avenue in NYC and had an ad in The Village once. I was a student for a few months and went to see his band Souler Energy at Mikells on the upper west side. He had Arlen Roth on guitar. Great guy and a great teacher.

While I was recording at a studio in San Jose, California, the engineer had a couple packs of unused DR bass strings and asked me if I wanted them. He said that Jerry Jemmott had left them there from a previous session because he didn't want/like them. So there was a few years there where I literally had Jerry's strings on my bass.

Not really a story, but Jerry was definitely the friendliest and funniest person I’ve photographed.

God Rest Berry Oakley, but I shudder to think what the ABB would have sounded like with Jemmott between Butch and Jaimoe and Duane and Dickey.

Hmm, the use of the phrase, “shudder to think” implies something negative. What would they have sounded like if Pete Carr of the Allman Joys would have stayed on? What’s your take on Lamar Williams? I can’t see that Jemmott would have been down for those long jams, but he definitely would have brought more funk to the proceedings, perhaps something along these lines…

That track(which was famously sampled for Beck’s tune, “Loser”), features Robert ‘Pops’ Popwell on bass, along with Duane, Butch, Jaimoe, plus Carr on additional guitar, Paul Hornsby on keys and the late Donna Godchaux on backing vocals. Oakley did play bass on some other songs from that album…

I took a few lessons from him as well, He was a great instructor, ruined me for other teachers but also made me realize that I could teach myself. I still remember his lessons.

So was I! Jerry took care of his mom at his apartment on Amsterdam and 155th. AMAZING person and my biggest influence along with Jamerson. One year we celebrated his birthday together. They don't mak'em anymore like Jerry...

The last time I saw Gregg Allman he had Jemmott on bass and the Allman bros catalog was turned into a Soul Stew. (Pun intended)

I also studied with Jerry in NY. He was a great teacher and a good dude. I remember when I would call him, he would pick up the phone and say, "Go." It was before caller ID - he did it to everyone. I thought it was pretty badass, TBH. He had a little Buddhist altar in his apartment, which I thought was pretty cool. Jerry's an interesting guy.
