I have 2 Fender jazz basses fitted with Alleva Coppolo pickups and I use a stomp box version of Jimmy Coppolo's preamp with them. I've found that the A/C pickups and preamp work really well together (which makes sense since they were designed and built by the same person).
I've read a lot of good things about the John East preamp(s) and I see that East "J-tone" preamp is basically the same configuration as the A/C preamp (treble & bass - boost only + passive tone control). I am wondering if the John East J-tone drop-in preamp has any similarity to Jimmy's preamp? Anybody out there familiar enough with both preamps, can comment? I know the A/C preamp has a notch filter in it. Jimmy told me such (but he wouldn't tell me what the frequency was ...).
I'm looking to put in an internal preamp so I will not have to connect an external preamp, one less thing to carry, etc ...
P.S. - If the A/C onboard preamp was readily available, I'd just have that installed. But it appears to be difficult to obtain. So if the John East has a similar sonic presentation, I'd be tempted to try it out. Plus, it has some other features that look interesting (such as being able to customize the EQ voicing somewhat).
