John Patitucci!!!!

Hey people, Was just reading the last thread on the three best bass players playing today, I was really suprised that (i may have missed it) John Patitucci' was name not mentioned. I personally think that John is one of the most experienced of not just bass but an all round musician, there is in the world..

You people have prob seen this before,but to me he doesn't need fancy techniques, i could listen to his fingerstyle for hours. To be honest, in this particular video (although this prob the only one) Victor was the least enjoyable.

Very entertaining all the same..

That's what I feel when I listen to Patitucci, one of my musical heroes and greatest influences...the man plays with great passion and soul, and when it comes to soloing, he has something more than many others gifted players....when I listen to his albums I don't hear just chops, but MUSIC!!

I wouldnt get turned off because 'someone' called him a virtuoso..He would probably never call himself a virtuoso,he is too humble.. and because anyone can copy a piece doesnt make them a good bass player...

Which im sure you are by the way!!:)

JP's chops are better than nearly any other bass player in the world, yet he truly doesn't use them unless it calls for it.

Also his tone has mellowed out in recent years and those who claimed to have hated his "Yamaha bass" tone, can and should check him out! He has raised his action and uses D'Addario Half-Rounds.

People have all kinds of reasons for liking one bass player or another and that sometimes has nothing to do with how good or bad they are.

Some of us Patitucci fans just don't frequent " best of" threads.;) But I will admit that he's so good I sometimes take him for granted. Check out how Wayne Shorter feels about him sometime.

Sure! As long as it's his solo stuff I like almost all his albums: "John Patitucci", "On The Corner" and "Sketchbook" are jazz/fusion oriented, "Now" and "Like An Angel" are more acoustic and "Another World", "Songs Storie And Spirituals" and "Mistura Fina" are great if you are into latin and african music....
Plus I like anything he has done with Chick Corea (above all "Elektric Band" and "Eye Of The Beholder"), "Voices Of The Heart" by Eric Marienthal, "Heads Up" by Dave WEckl...and if you want to focus on his upright playing , check out "Give And Take" by Mike Stern and "Through My Eyes" by Michel Camilo...

He's a great player, but more important than that, he's a great player who is also a very nice guy. There are a number of bassists (famous and unfamous) who have a lot to learn just from that combination by itself...

I once asked him after a show if he had ever thought about playing a six string upright bass, as he plays six-string electric bass, and that it seemed a six-string upright would be a natural for him. Some reason, he misunderstood the question, but he seemed to care to hear what I had asked and seemed to carefully formulate a response that wasn't flippant or standoffish even if I could tell he missed the angle I was going for.

John is one of those people in life where you feel who deserves every bit of "fame" and success they have achieved, and deserve even more than they have, even at his already high level of personal and professional development and visibility.

John is amazing, his style is very thoughtful and really covers alot of territory and it all seems very recognizeable regardless of whether he's playing electric or acoustic. Very nice phrasing in his solo on that 1st video. I dug all the other guys as well (usually do) but I has a scare at the end when I thought Regi (Wooten) was about to bust out one of his painfully rediculous solos. I know Vic says that's who taught him but come on! Fortunately we were not subjected to it.

Huh... I gotta admit, the stuff that I've heard Patitucci on (a couple Elektrik Band albums, John's first solo album, some Lee Ritenour album where JP only played upright, and a couple of YouTube videos where he jammed with the Bass Days All-Stars) makes me feel exactly the opposite: he's got fantastic chops, but absolutely no soul whatsoever, just sterile, unfeeling note after note. I've yet to hear him play anything that strikes me as being remotely "passionate" and a lot that strikes me as being robotic.

A really freakin' smart and fascile robot, but still...

I'll have to check out some of the recommendations listed above.

I dunno if you keep hearing someone is one of the best ever and you're just getting into them and they're they're okay but not the best (how I feel about many people I like) it kind of turns you off.

Thats why some people talk bad about Jaco (who I love) because other people treat him like God.

John seems to have a very nice proper, respectable attitude and is less of the show-offy type. I was more impressed that he played the Bach song because it's easier than because of it's difficulty. I think that takes a lot of discipline. Anyway, great bass player.

Try John's "ethnic" albums like "Antoher World", "Mistura Fina" and "Songs Stories And Spirituals", they are maybe a little less technical and more oriented on latin and african grooves..
Maybe it's just a matter of tastes....
