John Paul Jones's Bass?

Ok - I'd love to see a different Zep DVD, but I think I'll give "Song Remains" a second chance - maybe I'll appreciated it more now.

I tried that about ten years after I was first underwhelmed by TSRTS. It still sucked. The two-disc live DVD set that came out a couple of years ago blows it away.

I think it was a 63/64 Jazz.

As well as the Alembics, he played a maple-boarded fretless Precision, an EUB and a stipped Telecaster bass.

..as well as loads of others, probably. :-)

Anyone got a pic of the maple fretboard fretless Precision?

Is that the bass that I see on "In My Time of Dying" on the How the West Was Won DVD? What other songs was it used on?

Okay, I'm a huge JPJ & Zeppelin fan, so I'd like to call myself educated in the area of Jones' gear.

1961 Fender Jazz (used from 1961 to 1977)
1951 Fender Precision (used from 1971 to 1975) (the "Telecaster" bass)
1970 Fender Precision fretless (used in 1972 and in 1975 and 1977 for In My Time Of Dying)***
1967 Fender V (used in 1973 tours)
1968 Hagstrom H8 8-string (this is what Achilles Last Stand was played on, not an Alembic, when it was recorded)
Alembic Series II Omega (used from April 1977 to 1988)
Alembic Series I Triple Omega 8-string (used from April 1977 to 1988)
Acro upright bass (used on the 1975 acoustic set)

Acoustic amps & cabinets (from 1969-1980)

That's it for his Zeppelin bass gear. After Zeppelin
12-string Manson
12-string Manson
10-string Manson***
8-string Manson
5-string Manson fretless with a hipshot.
4-string Manson
4-string Manson Precision bass
4-string E-35 Manson (gold hardware)***
4-string E-35 Manson (black hardware)

and lots of Fenders and Fender copies.

*** used at the O2 reunion show if anyone cares

The real question is... What Bass Peddle Unit does he play?

If you watch "the song remains the same." You'll see him on the keyboards 80 percent of the time. Our GOD bass player, who we've duplicated for 40 years (and me in a LZ cover band for many...) is really a keyboard player.

He's truly one of the best musicians that has ever lived. A Concert Pianist, Mandolinist or is that Mandolinner... a host of other instruments and finally a Bass...

ANother real question is can he play the THEREMIN?

Who is JPJ? Was he in a band?

BOB

PS Winterburn, if you have all that in memory you need to get out more...

You forgot all about his Gibson EB-1 violin bass. Everyone associates JPJ's Led Zep days with Fender and Alembic. But much of Led Zeppelin III was recorded with a Gibson EB-1.
See JPJ's interview in Bass Player from February 2008.

JPJ claims that the EB-1 came to him from Little Richard's bass player. Ironically, Bob Daisley also claims to own an EB-1 bass formerly belonging to Little Richard's bass player.
Maybe its the same bass?

Rick Turner,
If youre still out there, can you tell us the difference between Series 1 and Series 2 Electronics. I know you havent worked with Alembic for years, but some insight would be nice on this awesome but complicated electronics scheme. JPJ could rock on a First Act from WalMart if he had to, its the man, but the nice basses are the gravy, for sure!

Mostly Jazz (and occasional P) for first 4 albums and corresponding tours.
Jazz and Bass-5 for Houses Of The Holy Tour.
Jazz and P for Physical Graffiti.
Acoustic 360 for 2nd album through Physical Grafitti.
After that he got into Alembic and GMT.
Didn't know that - I've seen pictures of him playing a 'burst Fender Bass V.

I've just read that his J is a '61 (he must have swapped out the electronics for a 3-knob), and the Telecaster may have been a '52 P. Not certain, though.

EB-1 only on a couple of songs. Celebration Day and Tangerine I think. The real deep stuff. The grindy stuff like Immigrant Song and Out On The Tiles were his Jazz with rotosound roundwounds.

I saw JPJ at a small club in Boston on his solo tour. I stood off to the side of the stage and found myself about 3 feet from the table set up for instrument tech work. The guy doing the work was Hugh Manson for JPJ ofcourse. I got to talking to him before the show and between songs and I asked if JPJ still had his Zeppelin Jazz. He said it just got it's 3rd refinish which Hugh did for him. I asked about current string use he said JPJ is using strings Manson puts out.

About 3 months later I went into a small music store that is a few blocks from that same nightclub. This shop is known for always having good used older Fender stuff. On the music store wall were some autographed Led Zep pictures with JPJ signature on them. The guy running the store said JPJ and Hugh Manson walked in the afternoon of the show and played a bunch of the older stuff. JohnPaul came to the counter with a 70's Tele 6string and some other guitars. They swiped his credit card and it got denied. Turned out that he had a problem with the credit card security where it was a large overseas purchase. I'm sure he's got the money to back it! I found it all interesting since I think the man is the best. I'm in that shop quite often playing all my favorite Zeppelin bass parts on ther cool older Fenders. Can you imagine if I happened to be doing it the day those two walked in. I look up from my Zep riffing and there's John Paul Jones standing there looking at me.

I had a similar experience back in the early 90s... was in the Bass Centre in London, just dropped in to try out some basses (it was a regular thing every other Wednesday afternoon :) ), sat down with a Warwick to chug out a few riffs, and there was some old bloke over the other side of the shop also playing a Warwick, banging out all these insanely fast blues licks. I knew I recognised him from somewhere, but couldn't place him (although I couldn't see him clearly from the back). So, there I was, sitting there playing, and he comes over to where I'm sitting, hangs the Warwick back on the wall next to me, and complimented me on my shoes (red DMs)... it was John Entwistle. :D I should have guessed when I saw the Bentley parked outside...

He created the Alembic Triple Omega:
