John Paul Jones's Bass?

I believe For Your Life was the Hagstrom 8-string. He didn't have the Becvar 8-string when a Presence was recorded so he used the Hagstrom for Achilles Last Stand and other stuff.

Nope in a 1977 interview with the dutch magazine Music Maker he says the Becvar/Alembic 8 string was the one used on Achilles and Nobody' Fault. "Jimmy kept cursing me for that, since he had only a couple of Gibsons who could compete with the Alembic sound"
"Yeah I had a Hagstrom... same type as Jimi Hendrix. But I never used it on a Zeppelin recording. Awful bass to use. The sound was everywhere. I did use it (the Hagstrom 8) live regularly, though".

In the same interview he states at one time he considered to buy a Fender VI but ultimately he didn't because of the tight string spacing. Jonesy's photograph clutching a six string during a ( sixties) studio session, must be have been studio gear.
And last but not least his relationship with the Gibby EB 1 "I always feel the urge to pull something in place of toying with something that feels like a rubber band"

Hope this sheds some new light on the topic. Cheers

Well maybe maybe not, sorry for my terse reply. He did use a EB1, got the album wrong. But still believe Dazed is the EB1. I have played many a Jazz and Gibsons of the EB family. I don't see any other way the tone on Dazed could be achived.

It's all good. FWIW - I think it's the Jazz w/flats, mute and a pick. It sure does sound different than later live versions.

The foam mute has a pretty big spread as far as how it affects tone. On LZI, sounds like he is really jamming a big piece of foam in there, and farther from the bridge. Even without a pick that would still give a clicky tone.

LZII (Ramble on, Lemon Song, etc) still sounds like the mute but its either a smaller piece and/or closer to the bridge.

Dazed is an example of extreme muting.

Great thread. I always heard it as maybe JPJ was using his jazz with the tone knob all the way down. What it sounded like to me. Hard to know and harder to know if he used the neck pickup mostly or both pickups. Definitely never used just the bridge.

mute, knob down, hand closer to neck, eq and natural comp of vintage preamps in studio

if it's early j-bass probably cap that have impact on tone, maybe it have .05microf, how it's affect tone:
