John Suhr bass?

Hey guys, I'm still pretty new here, but recently I fell in love with the classic John Suhr bass, and I've been searching the net for one to no avail. There is one here in Brisbane (Australia) at guitar brothers, but it's priced at $4500 au, which is definitely out of my price range.
Does anyone know anywhere I could get one? I would probably have to have it shipped here, but I wouldn't have a problem with that. So any stores that carry them or any other handy hints would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I am curious as to whether some experts on here think that they are worth the extra money compared to a Fender Jazz, as I do a fair bit of gigging and throwing my basses around.

Although I've played a few, I haven't owned one, so I really can't offer a detailed opinion about them....

I hear that happens in AUS , something very hard to get is often through the roof and I'd say 4800 bucks is darn high and darn near double . IME I've never been a JB player until I picked up the Suhr I own now . It's just amazing in every way and it will be a bass I hold onto for the rest of my life . One thing I love the most and really connected with is it's unplugged sound it really speaks to me and I bought it right then and there .Everything else is icing on the cake . I think Rocket has more of these than anyone , hopefully they will be able to help you out . Best of luck in your quest and I'll just leave this here with you :D:bassist:

$4800 is high for what guys normally pay here (I think new they're around $2500-3000). However, if you look at it...the price isn't too far from and Alleva-Copollo or Sadowsky, and the bass is easily on par.

They're more Fender than a Sadowsky, and IMO pretty much worth every cent. I own 3 and beat the hell out of them. I would recommend the vintage (single coil) pickups and also adding a passive switch/passive tone. Also, IMO the pots John uses (500k) are a bit zingy and brittle for my taste (again, I'm after a Fender sound)...so I'd also replace those with 250k. The 2 band pre is better than the 3 band, though both are cool. I had my 2 band pre rewired from vol, blend, treb bass.... to: stack vol, passive tone/switch, treb, bass. It's perfect now.

Here is a clip from a gig I did recently on Good Morning America with Debbie Gibson...mostly slap stuff and I am using the preamp for a more active tone. I normally use the bass passive...but for this gig I bumped it up a bit

Cool guys, thanks for the links and the info, it's so helpful and impressive. as soon as I held one I knew, so I'm just going to go for it I think, but try to be patient as well.
Also, I play through an orange bass amp and head at the moment, and when I tried the John Suhr bass out at the shop I was playing through a TC electronics amp, which I know is quite different from mine. I'm worried a bit that I will buy a Suhr bass, get it home, and get a bit of a shock with the sound.
