Johnk has a crossover distortion coming out.

I was the first person to jump in and order this pedal and it's stupid good! I received the pedal on Monday, but my pedal board wasn't at home and I didn't find a power supply I could use to power it laying around the house. I had a gig last night, but it was a singer-songwriter acoustic guitar sort of thing, so I didn't mess around with it too much though I did take it along. I've been playing through it this afternoon and absolutely love what I'm getting out of it.

The pedal can sound very much like a pushed tube amp and the variable crossover allows for finding that happy medium of retaining a fat tone and getting the amount of grind that you want. The EQ sounds great and offers a lot of control in sculpting whatever you want, but just the crossover and distortion circuits offer plenty of flexibility. For someone who wants a smaller footprint, you absolutely can't go wrong with the XO mini John just made available:

That said, the bigger pedal with the EQ section could definitely serve as a nice stand alone preamp and even a little nudge of the 60 Hz knob really fills out the low end!

I have not actually gotten my XO yet, but I have played a couple other Crossovers and I got rid of all of them. The reason why is becuase they all neglect to leave the low end alone gain wise. The Four Eyes Fuzz and the XD-2 do not really allow you to get totally clean bass with a distorted top. My VFE Rup is the same way. If I want the lows in there, they have to have some degree of gain applied. The XO allows me to only distort my top end, which is key. My Daring Audio Laser Cannon HD allows for super clean lows and a distorted top end, but the pedal itself is kinda clunky and doesn't every achieve unity volume in a way I like. Plus it has a wonky blend too. I'm hoping JohnK took all these older ideas and improved upon them.

i had the same issues with my VFE bass Truimverate (the 3 way distortion section of the RUP), my Four Eyes Fuzz, my Brimstone XD-1 and Basilisk, which is why i had to create my own version of a crossover distortion and crossover mixer. I think you'll be pleased with how the XO works for you.

Super looking forward to it. In my perfect world I'd be able to add a couple outs on the XO to give it the functionality of the Cross Mix too. Maybe on the deluxe version? :)

well, if i ever do build a deluxe version, it would definitely have to be in a larger enclosure since 4 additional jacks (separate ins and out's for the XO) takes up a lot of internal space.

This arrived today. I tested it with a VT Bass v2 which was handy, though I intend to use it with other distortion pedals.
Very pleased with the results, the freq knob really opens up how the VT’s EQ section works.
One thing I find funny is the position of the up (not pictured) and down arrows indicating the input and output jacks. I can see now why they’re like that, but at first I thought the input was on the left and the output on the right, which is unusual for most pedals :bag:
Had no such issue with the sends and returns :thumbsup: The mini XO is going on the small board that I use with my trio. The cross-mix is going on my main board.

actually, i just noticed the error in my artwork on the input and output jack arrows today when i was looking at the etch mask for #2. (oops!) if it ends up bothering you, you can send it back to me and i'll etch a new enclosure for it and remount everything. like 99.9% of pedals, on mine, the input is always on the right and the output on the left.
