JPTR Bass Jive

Zvex Super Duper is two independent SHOs in one pedal, the 2nd has a master volume. If you like the Jive with no clipping then chances are you'll love the Super Duper.

With master volume at max it'll blow your toupee right off.

Basically the SHO is marketed as clean, but isn't really completely clean. You can find guitarists online talking about how it adds a little something to their tone beyond just a clean boost. It seems to me that bass is more sensitive to mild clipping of any kind than guitar is, I have definitely noticed "low gain overdrive" guitar pedals that sounded pretty darn distorted on bass.

I get all of that. What I'm asking is an eli5 of what about this circuit design makes it a reproduction of that reel-to-reel preamp.

There's really only a handful of pedal creators that come with original stuff (Steve Ridinger, Roger Mayer, Zvex, Devi Ever, etc)... and a lot that just tweak, repurpose circuit sections (JHS, JPTR, etc).

Jive is a SHO with clipping diodes.
Warlow is a Opamp Big Muff with different tone stacks.
Silver Machine is a dual SHO into a Octavia.

So what do you guys think they'll change on the bass version? Chris said it would have "a more bass friendly options instead of the clipping switches".

I think the usual response bass players would give for a drive pedal is "blend knob". I don't think blend knob is useful for Jive without clipping diodes though. Without those diodes, it's perfectly transparent enough and doesn't have a loss of low end.

I'll play. I bet nothing mind blowing. Here are some guesses:

Double SHO. Like @johnk_10 and I enjoy. This is the one I made. Not quite as beautiful as JohnK's hah.

SHO driving a JFET Mu-amp.

Higher forward voltage clipper like LEDs (for more headroom and softer knee) or perhaps MOSFETs used as clippers (this would be good for the parts picking machine).

CD4049 based drive (like B3K etc).

Perhaps tack a transformer at the end of whatever.

Maybe just a bass tube screamer like the Blumes!

I'm not sure they'd move away from the base SHO design, so a different drive design like CD4049 or Tube Screamer would end up being a completely different pedal rather than "bass version of Jive".

For double SHO I actually meant a 2nd fixed SHO gain stage for dirt like the Zvex Box of Rock (not a full discrete 2nd SHO with gain control).

I'm thinking like you, it likely will be the SHO plus something. Something being a 'dirtier' of some kind.

B3k uses OPAMPs into a single 4049 stage but you could use a SHO instead of an OPAMP, but probably too left field for them.

If I was going to bet, I'd bet some sort of hard clipper, like the original Jive, but with more headroom like the options I mentioned above.

Tube screamer was a tongue in cheek joke :)

I was just thinking there’s not much they can really add to the SHO circuit to make it “more bass friendly” and not rely on clipping switches. Blend, eq, meh. Totally not needed on a circuit like that. They might use clippers in the end or maybe scrap the idea altogether. We’ll see.

I know, but how useful is it with just one master control? Once I crank the gain, my volume has to be quite low. I turn the gain down, it’s too quiet. I guess it could be used as a light saturator and a boost in one, but that’s about it then. I already have to crank the gain to about 2 to 3 o clock to get that light drive happening with no diodes.
 
Actually, I am using my Jive with clean blend. It is placed in Broughton Filter FX loop. HPF set at approx. 250Hz, and LPF set at 1.5kHz, I use the Jive to saturate mids…and mix it with clean signal…

Interesting! Do you use any clipping diodes? I find that without them, it stays fairly clean until gain is around 2 o clock. And even then it’s transparent enough to not need any clean blended in. I could see a use for it with clipping diodes though, but those also compress the signal quite a bit more.

I am using either first diode or no diode.

I use the first diode when I am using Jive full range (without clean blend). The reason is that without any diode activated, the saturation is unbalanced - the Jive saturates more on lower notes and less on higher notes. This is an issue (for me) especially on 5 string basses.

When I use the Jive with clean blend, I usually use it without any diode activated (gain at 3 o'clock and above). Since the HPF on the wet channel is set at approx. 250 Hz, the Jive does not receive any low frequencies...so the afore-mentioned issue is not present in this scenario...
