Judas Priest VS. Iron Maiden

Which band is better?

Right on with Smash's guitar comment. Iron Maiden really made harmonized guitars in metal awesome. Their guitar work is... well thought out. Where Priest seem to just bang out a stupid riff.

Though, my favorite thing about Judas Priest, songs like Burning Up or any of their sex driven songs are about gettin' it on with a dude. And I'm sure some mulleted homophobs rocked those songs hard back in the day.

lol i saw maiden open for priest for the screaming for vengeance tour (they were touring for killers, iirc). they blew priest out of the water, then. i have since seen maiden about 10 more times, give or take, and every timeit's been a great show. saw priest a few times too, they were ok, but nowhere near.

musicwise, there's even less of a comparison. there are more good songs on any particular iron maiden album than priest has had in its whole career. :hyper:

lol, i never heard any metallica in iron maiden. i have heard iron maiden in metallica, especially the older stuff.

The second part is true, but Iron Maiden was influenced only in small ways, like certain song arrangements and in soem heavier riffs. But that is more moving with the times then being influenced by metallica...I mean...maiden even did Somewhere in Time, which is a really really eighties-metal influenced album in terms of songs (some parts more like the hair-metal choruses...but maiden can make even silly cheesy songs great with amazing guitar solos and awesome riffage)

I spent my teenage years listening to Maiden and Priest. I have seen each band live at least five times. After every Maiden and Priest show I attended, I can honestly say one thing: Both bands work their butts off at each and every show and always give 100% to their fans. Which one is better?? What do you like better, apples or oranges??
Which band do I prefer? Iron Maiden of course :bassist:

I have seen this same topic many times
I prefer Priest over Maiden
I have to be in the mood for Maidens non stop galloping guitar..It seems like every song has that damn gallop and therefore most of there songs sound the same.

omgosh i know....i love both the bands they are great...but i have to take glenn tipton and kk downings duel lead guitar over maidens constant gallop sound. (even though maiden are great) priest wins

+1

Maiden is way more musical sounding than Priest IMHO. The songs have held up much better over time. I don't care for the Blaze Bailey stuff, but love Dickinson's voice.

Tipton and Downing may be better shredders(IMHO that is debateable) but Adrian Smith and Dave Murray are better soloists. And their harmonized twin lead parts are killer.

First off, I play in a metal tribute band with a set list that is heavy with both Maiden and Priest. I also grew up on these bands back in the 80's, so both had a big influence on me.
I can understand all the points on what makes Maiden better, and I suspected it would go that way based on Steve Harris alone. After all, this is a forum for bass players.
I just don't get all the negativity about Priest. Great band that is one of the pioneers of metal, and had a great influence on other bands. Solid musicians and one of the great singers of heavy music. They also just put out a new album that kicks some serious ass.
Like I said, I can understand picking Maiden b/c I love them too, but I think comparing Priest to "camel urine" is a ridiculous statement.

How can the vocals to "Screaming for Vengance" be considered good... or even acceptable? After recording that how could they have been like... oh that sounds good, that's a wrap. He can whine really high, is that cool?

I don't like high male singers at all, I tolerate some (Geddy) but I don't like any. But Bruce Dickinson doesn't sounds like he's straining the whole time, everything is very fluent with him.

The guitar, I can't think of a single Judas Priest solo that wasn't just... wank. Maiden's lead playing is phenomenal. I think the reason is, Maiden allow themselves to leave the rhythm open to a bassist, so they can both do leads. There is no point to comparing bassists, that's not what this thread is about, because there is no competition, and I don't even worship Steve Harris, though he's fast... run to the hills break... damn.

Drummers too, I don't know any names, but Priest drummer is always doing the 4 on the floor AC/DC beat, at least MC Maiden changes it up a bit.

Camel Urine is a compliment for Priest, I only like two or three songs by them, and I have to ignore the vocals.

Oh, and one of the songs is Breaking the Law... and I like that because it's a joke... it really is. I mean, I have a fond memory of it, my friend and I were crusing in my mom's mini van to get groceries or something, and that came on and we leaned out the window shaking our fists in 80s metal fashion out of a minivan.

But then again, that Minivan was known to have Slayer blast out of it on a few occasions. :ninja: :bassist:

The thing is...maiden's music is very listenable and catchy. Maiden groove very well, and know what should go where, and when it should.. No disrespect JP because they have some very talented musicians. It's all personal preference though.
