Jule Amps Monique

Munji, I used to fall for that "it gets eaten up live" hype for a while, but it's untrue. If it weren't untrue, then you would play Behringer amps and cabs and be perfectly happy.

Yes, the 12AU7 is only doing current sourcing. It does nothing to tone. Just provides current.

A 12AX7 would not work as well. Less current and more noise.

I believe that the 12AU7 ramps up the output gain on the unbalanced line out. You might be able to get out output from the line out with a 12AX7. Not sure. Any thoughts, Jule?

That means you are getting about 1/10th of what you should. 1:1 is not enough. I agree, "Something's definitely not quite right."

****In another test, I also ran my Dingwall bass (OBP-1 equipped) directly into the power amp, then A/B'ed it with the Monique set to full Line Level and found that they're of nearly equivalent output, with the bass alone being only slightly less loud. Something's definitely not quite right.

Just level. It does nothing to gain.

You can add/subtract gain (and some level) with Sensitivity and with each of the EQ band controls.
That's interesting. More output? Clean or dirty?
Come in from the Surf, Jule!!!!:):):):)

I appreciate you posting these. I'm just glad to be in good company. :)

Here's the Monique and J48 from the Jule site. I have a real hard time telling the difference, and definitely don't see how anyone could say one is "better" than the other.

Thanks Jule! I appreciate your help, AND your call this morning (what had to be first thing in left coast time).

As we surmised, I'm probably afflicted by the slings and arrows of the cruel fates of the shipping gods. The good news for anyone who's following is that Jule has offered to ship a new unit to me ASAP, and is issuing a call tag for my Monique to make it back to him.

I will say that I was pretty sad about the situation before we talked, but I'm looking forward to the 'real thing' in the near future. :bassist:

Until then I'll be playing my ol' Kern, which isn't a bad fate in itself. I'm certainly glad I didn't sell it to fund the Monique at this point! Its never bad to have options.

Intersting Skies b/c my Monique has the lack of gain. I took it to a gig the other night paired it with a QSC PLX 1804 into a Fearful 15/6. With the gain all the way up on the QSC and level out on the Monique all the way up it wasnt enough volume to use on the gig (good thing I brought a backup...) This is a fusion/funk gig that doesnt get too loud.

I'll have to email Jule and see if he knows whats up. He has the best customer service of any company that I have delt with!!!

I'm sorry to hear of your difficulties too!

Jule really spent a good part of his morning making lemonade for me, if you know what I'm sayin'. I spent a good part of my weekend trying and troubleshooting. The levels that the Line Out should be capable of per Jule's measurements (he was getting over 4V with a passive bass with weak signal).

He thinks the problem is the JJ rectifier tube. There's been a high-reject rate/high failure rate, and while we're only assuming from the symptoms and at least one other unit with a dead rectifier, it seems likely. I don't have a place locally to find a replacement, but if you can find a local EZ81/6CA4 you might be in good shape!

Good to hear - I just sent mine back to Jule a few months ago for a tune up and new bamboo cage. Mine sounds great on recordings but this was the first time I tried the pre/power thing. Really hope it's as simple a new tube.

Jule is great and Im sure he will bend over backwards to fix this - keep us posted on the staus of yours...

Will do. Right now she's got her traveling clothes on. :)

Mine is going back as well for some upgrades. I love the sound of the Monique but it's extremely quiet live as well as in several studios and I wasn't able to use it. Jule is the man and says he's going to replace several parts for me including my preamp tubes which ring pretty hard as well from microphonics. I've found it's really hard to get that tube gain grit when using the line out but with the XLR out it starts breaking up beautifully by about half way on the sensitivity knob and full out distortion with it pulled. I'm really hoping this new tube will correct my live playing gain issues....

Thank you Mr. Skies.

Options are always good. I dislike getting rid of anything that makes music.

It appears that it is going to be better to send all 4 tubes for the rack mount Monique un-installed but packed even better than the double boxing scheme. Most have made it "home" unscathed, but it is better to prepare for the worst. As you've found, it is real easy to get inside Monique.

Thank you for helping me make this first performance with the Rack Mount Monique.

Again, Jule it's a pleasure. I'm happy to install tubes (most of the tube amps or preamps I've received through shipping have had the tubes removed). The lid is easy to get off, 6 screws then slide it up and out. The first time I tried, there was a hitch and I had to loosen the top two back screws a touch to get enough clearance (there was a wire that had moved up against the chassis and was blocking the 'slide' part of things).

For those interested, here's the unit opened and you can see how easily accessible the tubes are:

Thanks for the gut shots

Hmmmm...after hearing of these shipping issues I am revisiting the idea of driving up to Santa Cruz and picking up my Monique in the flesh. My V8 can be thirsty though. ;-)

When I bought my 400+, I drove from Syracuse NY to Cape Cod, with a round trip of 10 hours so I didn't have to ship it.

Isn't she beautiful?!!:)
Position #1 then #2 6SL7s.
The 12au7 is in the can cover.
The Rectifier is by itself way over on the right.
The air vents are top pic on left and visible on back panel.
Mine stayed just warm outside in 87 degrees for and hour and 1/2 Sunday.

Yes. The back panel has the Cinemag balanced out transformer. This transformer was originally intended to just put out 1:1 DI level.

The black transformer on the right is the power transformer. It provides power for everything. Both are US made, I am proud to say.

Awesome pics, thanks skies!

So the transformer at the back for balanced out, the big one for the power supply, and the small one to step up voltage for the plates?
