It is odd how hearing basslines that i have absolutely loved in the context of the whole song,sound so unbelievably bad when isolated. I used to cringe when i would listen back to solo'd bass lines i'd recorded,that ultimately sounded fantastic in the final mix. It is a weird thing,but it is illuminating.

While I occasionally indulge in these, they're kinda pointless in my estimation. A sound is only good, if it works in the context of a mix. When I used to play a P Bass exclusively, I'd love the sound of the tone completely rolled off while playing in my bedroom. I could never get thus "great" sound to work in a band context.

I did tone off for a few songs tonight...I dug it and I thought it worked well for a few 60's R&B songs we do. Helps to have pickups that don't suck when you do it. Usually don't go all the way down with it, though.

I think these iso'd tracks are great for how it demonstrates that the tone we think we hear isn't always what it is when we strip out everything else.

over the years in mixing, ive slowly begun to solo tracks less and less. Its kind of freeing to just mix a drum set as a drum set. same with the bass. A lot of the projects ive had, i had to reference the guitar and the kick at the same time as the bass to hear where they were stepping on eachother anyway.

I have wanted to find isolated tracks by The Cure, Chic, and Prince, but they don't appear on YouTube (which is where I found all the other isolated tracks).

How it sits in the mix is totally different than how it sounds isolated. When you hear the part to Red Barchetta, you would never believe all that fuzz would work, but it does.

Let's you know that there is a whole lot more to it than just sounding average (or below).

Those issues can be helped with Music Theory, Ear Training, Private Instruction.

I enjoy the bass tracks. The one's recorded in human time make a lot more sense if the drums are included(Steve Harris, Cliff Burton).
