Just bought a GK-MB2 lightweight head, noob needs help!

Hi to all,

I've been playing bass for a while, and have been using combos or the amps that club provides.

Now I've moved to London and starting to get gigs.
I bought the Gk Mb2 lightweight because It is light enough to carry around but I am having a bit of trouble finding a right cab.

Is it okay for me to plug my gk(350 at 8 ohms) into a 200/250 watt at 8ohms without burning it(I will be easy on the volume of course) or into a bass woofer?

My budget is about 300 pound.
Price and weight is my main issue since most of the cabs that gives out more than 350watt are Huge or ridiculously expensive.

To be honest, cabs in London are ridiculously expensive compare to other country..If the bass woofer for stereo works I might stick with it.

You'll be fine. You should be able to generate a good deal of volume before you damage the speaker. It is not unusual to have an amp with more watts than the cab is rated. If you hear the speaker distorting back off.

I have no experience with them, but I am going to order some Midget cabs. (1x12", 20lbs/9kg).

The Compact looks also interesting.



edit: and I'm also considering the MB2 500 or MB Fusion for a lightweight rig.

It is, but you should be careful to not crank your head.

Can you build your own cab?

There are great DIY resources that would get you a pro quality setup for less than your budget.

Until then, you should be fine with a 112x2 or a 210.

However...a gig bag with your bass and micro head on your back and a small cab in each hand should be perfect for a discrete setup.

Thats say I plug my gk 350 watt into a 250 watt cab.
What wattage approximately is the limit I would get out of it without killing it? 200Watt? (I dont mind a bit distortion as long as its within the safe region).

I talked to the local music shop and they wont let me try it cause the only cab they have is a kustom 250watt at 8Ohms and I would blow it off right away once I turn my gk volume over 2...

I'd also suggest looking into the Barefaced cabs or a Bag End if they're available. Maybe the GK neo cabs too. I also have the GK MB2-500 and it's a great little amp. I was having some trouble dialing in a good tone and then I turned down the gain to about 9 o'clock and turned up the master and now it's got some great tone (not that it wasn't good before but it's better now).

A 350 watt amp into a 250 watt cab is fine. Just don't over do it, and listen for signs of distress from the speaker.

As far as using a woofer from a home stereo - DON'T.

They are not made to the same freq response and power handling of bass cab speakers. You will damage it.

Just because your amp is capable of producing 350 watts does not mean it is putting out that much all the time. Your power level would have to be pretty high (alot higher than 2 on the amp).

I think that guy was over reacting or he just doest like me at all...
Gk Neo series was my first option until I saw the rrp was 500 for the cheapest 112 neo in the Bass gallery....

Gk is ridiculously over priced in London if by any chance any one who knows a decent/cheap music shop around London please tell me.

You'll probably get a better deal on something mfg'd in Europe. How's the local prices on Markbass or EBS or TC Electronics? Or there's the used market.
