Just Bought a Mystery Bass (please help ID)!

Wow - congrats! That is a very rare vintage Sumdewd 4-string, and is highly collectible!
It was designed and hand built by Sumdewd in his basement lutherie.
It's tough to tell the year from the photos, but it looks to definitely be somewhere between 1951 and 2018.
Take good care of it, and it is sure to appreciate in value!

Wild,how the bridge is so deep down that taking strings on/off scrapes the edge of the recess.

That almost looks like it was routed for some other bridge with all that gap along the back edge. Mystery! Intrigue!

It's not a Gibson. And the pickups haven't come from one either.

The body reminds me of an early Paul Reed Smith owned by a member here, but neck bears no resemblance whatsoever. Hamer was another option for the body that popped up in my mind although I don't recall seeing one quite like that.

Custom build of some kind is the most likely answer IMO.

+1, reminded me of @BassHappy's PRS as well. The body shape, that is. They're leagues apart in almost every other respect:

(OK, no, yeah, they've got the BA bridge in common as well.)

It does appear to be reminiscent of one, but I'm not sold on that theory yet. Wish I had something a bit more concrete on who the actual builder was. I'm going to have her tomorrow and will take her apart and inspect the insides of the cavities, etc .

Unfortunately, not. Neck had a minor twist and one pickup wasn't working so I sent it back to the seller. As I recall, another TBer bought it from the same seller.
