Woo Hoo!!!

Couldn't pass up the $1104.15 deal from Musician's Friend. Even though the 15% VIP15MF coupon expired, they still honored it for me. Can't beat their service!

Also...they said if the backorder "took too long" I could possibly get another color if they have no specific arrival date for the Mudnight Spew...I was told to call about once a month to check the status and also to make sure the order doesn't get kicked out of the system over time.

...hoping to get a new Jetglo out of this deal!


I'm up to 18 Ricks now...

Not really...most of them were purchased WAY before prices got out of hand. My first new fireglo 4003 in 1989 was $675 from Victor Litz Music. Got a used '78 4001 for $200 in 1990, an '86 used mapleglo lefty V63 for $650 in 1990...I routinely price-matched in the 90's and spent between $800-900 from AMS and Musician's Friend for a jetglo, two fireglos, and a mapleglo. I bought a new figured maple V63 in 1999 from Guitar Center for $1200, a fretless fireglo from Mike Parks for around $950...along with a couple blueboys for $1100 and bluebursts for around $1400 (which was getting expensive, even a few years ago). I believe I paid around that amount or slightly more for my two sea greens. The most I paid was for a new fireglo C64 in 2009 for around $2300, the most I've ever spent on a bass...but I love the reverse headstock. But, the great majority of them were amazing deals even in their time...I never envisioned purchasing another NEW Rick because quite frankly while they are great basses their quality control simply does NOT equal the prices they are going for today. But for $1100...hell yeah.

Crazy. But I understand. even though I already own a Ric, I seriously considered buying another one with the Mid sale. Then I realized that a 4003 is a 4003 and I couldn't afford to have multiple basses that did the same thing.

I like to think I have a good understand of GAS, but I don't. I can't fathom owning 18 of the same bass. I've got about 20 basses (last time I counted anyhow), but pretty much every one of them serves a different function. I can justify them all. Even if I had millions, I couldn't imagine buying another Big Al. OK, maybe one more, a different color as a backup... but 17 more. I dont' get it.

But congratulations anyhow. In some way that I can't understand I'm sure you're loving the hell out of it. :)

That's cool...I'm just messin' with ya. :) I love inexpensive basses such as the Squier P-Bass Special and Classic Vibe nearly as much...and they're so much value for the money that it's nearly laughable. DEFINITELY painted better than Ricks as far as attention to detail...but Rickenbacker can nowadays simply get by on their name (and their fanboi's delusions) by basically lowering quality/attention to detail while charging whatever they please-and still sell every one they can build. Flawed instruments (some shockingly so), but I still like them.

Hmmm...I justify all of mine because I like them. I think I'm up to between 55-60 total now. I can't keep count that high when I try to remember them all. :eek:

I can see it. At a certain point, it ceases being about strict practicality per se, and becomes more about image and a sense of self-identity.

I used to have a Rickenbacker fetish as well, though that was quite a few years ago, and I eventually got over it. Like ggoat!!, I could also see the imperfections of the instrument, i.e. how it wasn't ideally suited to cover a wide range of genres, etc. But for what it does, it does it in style. :cool:

If you're going to have a fetish, you certainly could do far worse than Rickenbacker basses...as long as you can afford to support it...

Really? I ordered the same thing; this is my first experience with a backordered item at MF and I certainly hope this isn't actually necessary.

Nope! I have 5 fireglo's (1 '89 "big body" 4003-actually the best playing bass I own, 1 flame maple '99 4003, another '99 4003 w/flamed neck, 1 fretless, 1 C64), 3 mapleglo's (1 '86 V63 lefty, 1 highly figured/flame V63, 1 4003), 1 jetglo 4003, 1 white/cream 4001 with black binding and a Kahler, 1 lefty blue/black hardware, 2 blueboy's, 2 sea green's, 2 bluebursts...plus this new one and a Univox maple copy for good measure.

Yep...customer service told me that if the backorders go as long as these are projected to (2013!) that the order may simply get kicked out of the system for being in so long...thinking that someone merely forgot about the order. I was told to call in at least once a month to keep the order current and not jeopardize it being cancelled without notice. It shouldn't happen like this, but it apparently does with loooong backorders.

Me too. When I bought my 4001 MG in '76 for $350 (MG was $25 more than FG ) I sold my '64 Fender
Precision (one of my biggest regrets), but hey, Glover, Geddy, Squire, McCartney were playing them so it made sense back then.

Now it makes sense cuz I'm getting one for $1106.
