Just bought my first pipe.

Its a Very small (only 3" long) and its all wooden and I'd like to get it lit up as soon as i can.

The inside of the bowl is wooden so would i need to use a gauze/screen in the bowl or can i use it as it is?

Also, the only tobacco i have at the moment is a shag hand rolling cigarette tobacco so would this be all right until i can get some proper pipe tobacco?

I would have put this on the smokersforum but i am still waiting to be allowed to post :p

Cant wait :hyper:
Bass Junkie.

P.s Please no "ITKILZYOUS" or spamming this thread, this is for pipe smokers only.

Before you fire it up, take a small dab of honey and lightly coat the the inside of the bowl. Tobacco typically doesn't require a screen, but it might be a good idea given the extremely small dimensions of your new pipe.

Should i do this Every time before i light it or is it just the once?

The hole is at the bottom of the bowl, its quite a small bowl (I got it from a hippie bong shop) but it was cute and only £3 so i thought I'd get it.

What about tobacco?

Here's my new companion:

The bowl starts at the top of the two ridges.

Nah, honey it before you use it the first time. It'll help keep the wood from burning. The guy that ran the head shop I used to frequent back in the 70's and 80's swore by this method, and I just kind of took it for granted.

That pipe doesn't scream tobacco to me. I think it would be at home with cigarette tobacco as well as anything else you might want to stuff into it.

For pipe tobacco, I like a nice vanilla Cavendish, or a blend containing it.

Wow...I didn't think anyone ever heeded the "Tobacco use only" signs they keep up(if they have those over your way).

No one will believe you smoke tobacco out of that. Expect to, at least, be questioned about it if you ever use it in public.

I know its not a proper tobacco pipe but it looked nice and i was in a buying mood lol :p

I want to buy a better one soon soon but this one will do for now.

Yeah dude, if you really want to smoke tobacco out of that, I would've gotten a pipe that's a little more "traditional" looking... like sherlock holmes (or popeye). That and idk how many 16 year olds actually smoke pipes, but I hold you in great esteem for being so classy at such a young age... when I was 16 I wanted a top hat. I feel like these things fall in the same category and I applaud you, sir.

Hmm, looks more like a shot pipe to me, I've got a metal one.

You can use Shag tobacco, but you'll need a gauze. That is unless you enjoy little bits of possibly burning tobacco being sucked into your mouth. Rolling tobacco is probably going to burn

I think if you want to want to enjoy a fine smoking pipe experience you'ld be better off getting something a little more traditional, with a bit more length. Of course I'm no expert in these matters so give it a go by all means.

Yes, really.

Well none of the shops round here sell traditional looking pipes and my girlfriend said this one would suit me.

I can imagine myself in a top hat too...

Your keyboard looks like it came from the future.

Its a video editing keyboard :p

I'll get some gauzes when i next go into town, shame that there aren't any tobacconists anywhere near here though :atoz:

Concerning "screens" or "gauze", here's a tip from an old fart that has had some experience with pipes and their accessories:

You don't ever actually have to buy a screen for a pipe. Ever. They are readily available pretty much everywhere for free.

All you gotta do is walk into any restroom anywhere in the free world, and unscrew the end of the spigot on the sink. There is always a screen of the perfect dimension contained within. That is unless I've gotten to it first.

I'm not sure, I think generally they are of one size. They're malleable enough to shape to the bottom of the bowl. Really they're there to make sure the hole is covered.

This is what I have:

The bowl of my pipe is around the same size as yours. You can get these for about 50p
