Sure, I think it's rare that somebody might purposely do it, like me. However, the condition of the body and neck is a better indicator. If it looks good, plays good and everything works well what's to worry about regarding mistreatment?
Must agree though if you're ordering online sight unseen that is a red flag.

Ill find out today what the prognosis is.... Honestly its not even playable at the moment but Im thinking this thing has never been set up at all. So far its been "set down"

I think it's missing the nut, so the strings aren't held in place properly.

Yikes. How come they don't check that before shipping? They're Hoping some newbie gets it that doesn't know any better.

You can always find another bass that actually works and sounds good.
