Just wondering what people are using when performing maintenance on their bass like changing strings, cleaning, and or doing setups. Do you place your basses on the floor, on top of a table??? I'd really like to know.

I have a very large neoprene like pad I lay them on, got it from a local gunsmith.

When changing strings, I just lay the bass across my lap. Other procedures call for other measures.

Depends. Most work is done with it laying on the bed or holding it. For few things like soldering as part of pup or control replacement would do that part with it laying on floor carpet. Then back to the bed or holding it for rest of work.

Stable, clear table with a thick towel underneath... and lots of light.

I place a towel on the kitchen table and a small pillow under the neck by the headstock to elevate it a bit under and bright light. This usually works out very well for me. Good luck.

For anything serious, dining room table with a heavy towel on it.
For changing strings, I just place the bass in a stand.

String changes start on my lap (feeding through bridge or body) then end with the bass on a stand so I can get better leverage with the string winder.

Soldering and other stuff is done with a towel spread out on the carpeted floor with a couch cushion supporting the headstock. Real professional setup I have...

I usually lay it on the bed or a table with a blanket covering it. Just in case.

I change my strings with my instruments sitting in my lap, resting on a particular Poly-cotton T-shirt that I happened to notice did a great job of removing smudges and lint, and causing no scratches. I always use a tuning machine winder.

I check action height and relief while in playing position, and change strings with the body laying on a foam wedge shaped pillow with the neck pointing upwards.

I change strings about every 4 months, but this is entirely subjective.

I find it uncomfortable to due these things to my bass while on the floor, sofa, chair or even bed. That's how I've done it all these years but still find it to be uncomfortable. Hey Stacatto, that Fender workstation looks pretty cool!!!
