Just Got Ripped Off on eBay

this thread really delivers the poo...

I think the OP should take the $600 that he was refunded and now donate it to charity...there are plenty of starving children in this world who could care LESS that he got ripped off...

all THEY know is that $600 can keep their little bellies full for a very long time...

I agree ! Seems like the OP thought he was getting a steal of a deal on a Custom Shop 51 P-Bass, and it turned around on him.

I have a better idea. Why don't you refrain from telling people you don't know how to use their money. Then, if you feel so bad about the state of the world, you can donate your own $600 to feed them.

dudes...read the whole, boring thread...ok...

or depending on your attitude, the whole informative thread.

Pilbarabass, just keep the comments related to the thread. If you aren't interested in the thread then why did you take the time to put in your two cents? The fact that there is over 100 responses shows me there ARE people who care about this.

Over 300 transactions on Ebay now, and I've only had to go through paypal once to deal with a problem. Even then, I think it was a misunderstanding/oversight on the part of the seller. I bought a bottle of Crystal Head vodka and paid for it immediately, and Ebay canceled the listing very soon after, so the seller might have missed the fact that he had made a sale. Filed the complaint as "never recieved the item" and it was on my doorstep in less than a week. Ebay's got a policy about selling alcohol--you can do it if the bottle is the main selling point and the contents are just incidental. The bottle for this brand is kind of cool, and collectable, but it's something you can just pick up at BevMo, so I'd understand if Ebay didn't consider these proper under their terms of service.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I've had a higher rate of dissatisfaction dealing with local stores than with the sellers on Ebay. I think it also helps that I'm pretty suspicious when I look at auctions. Any signs that something may be a bit off, and I just pass.

I'm not new to Ebay. I have 700 transactions and am a powerseller for whatever that's worth. I've only dealt with filing a Paypal dispute this one time. I believe people are good and usually every transaction is pleasant as long as both sides are honest with each other. I took a chance with this guy since he had 100% positive feedback, and this time it bit me in the ass. But I'm still not deterred from buying on ebay. I've gotten a lot of killer deals by staying on top of newly listed things. It's just unfortunate that this didn't work out this time. And I'm really glad that what I received was at least still worthwhile, just over-valued and misrepresented.

Here is another update:
About a week and a half later, I got an email from Paypal saying that the refund of $600 had failed and I need to contact the seller. I emailed him two or three times over the span of a week and he never wrote back.
I have filed a dispute with Paypal and escalated it to a claim. The seller has still not responded to the claim.
Originally, the seller seemed remorseful and sent a refund to me. I thought all was well, but it looks like it might have all been a front. Now I have to deal with Paypal in this situation. I guess he wasn't a nice old man that just happened to sell me an altered bass
Next step you may want to call the Police in his town. There is also an FBI Internet Fraud dept. Which this is a crime.

I won a bass on eBay a few years back. It was a Westone that I won for something like $110.T he seller had over 3600 sales and had a good rating - but, I dint look in detail at recent scores. I paid immediately. So a week goes by, 2 weeks. I email. 3 weeks email him. By that time I find out its too late to recover my money via PayPal. No responses to emails. Try Squared trade - nothing. 2 months nothing. Get his phone number and politely call him to remind him of the sale. Tells me to F off!!!! - nothing. So, I get a hold of the local police in some little town in Missouri where he lived. They assigned a Detective to the case. He went out to his house! His wife gave him some BS about him being in Florida. The Detective told her he would be back when he came back. So....the detective finally gets a hold of him and he agrees to ship. 1 month= nothing, 2months=nothing. So, I call the guy and tell him I dont care if he sold it, just refund my cash. He tells me to F off and that im harassing him for no reason! The whole time i have been polite and pleasant to the guy (2 calls). So, I finally have had it. The Detective sends me the paperwork to press charges. I fill out send in to go back to the district attorney. He tells the Detective he shipped it out (lie). So, I call the guy one last time to get a tracking # for proof. He goes ballistic tells me to go to hell and he wasnt going to give me the tracking # because i didnt pay the 6 cents for it?!?!?! (since when do you have to pay for tracking #s) Low an behold 3 days later it shows up!!!!! 6 MONTHS LATER!!!! As described. So, they dropped the charges. End result - he has been banned for life from eBay (a whole other story dealing with ebay). Im not sure what happened with him as he was a big power seller, but in the previous 3 months he started pulling this on others. They all just gave up and lost their cash! I got a hold of all the other people he ripped and they all contacted the detective an moved forward with their cases.

So, be persistent and cool about it and dont give up. You will be right in the end.

Yeah, I didn't mean any of that as a criticism of you or how you handled this, just maybe as an alternative view to the "I'd never EVER buy a bass through Ebay!" people. I've done quite a few instrument purchases through Ebay, and the one time I had a bit of trouble was over a vodka bottle. Just be careful and communicate, and you're probably as safe as going to a brick-and-mortar store.

Yeah I know, I wasn't directing that towards you. :smug: I should have been more clear.
