Just Got Ripped Off on eBay

mr. mow is a complete clown, I have bought guitars and basses that are WAY better deals than what we are talking about on ebay. too good to be true? Not in the least. Try are 71 jazz for 750. Prs private stock for 3000 (flipped for 6500), custom 58 les paul for 1200. Out there on a daily basis. Wise up, I've flipped 150 guitars this year alone because there are so many good deals up there. Coupled with the fact that anyone whose been watching gear being sold knows that people are unloading ridiculous deals cause of the economy, and you realize the lawn mower is just not paying attention.

But thanks for insinuating that you are just the wisest person out there. That actually let's us know the opposite.

I gamble like a mad man on ebay cause of the policies these days. Bought 3 counterfeit Gibsons, all of them returned with no issues. I actually want to be stiffed by a seller because ebay has a policy about covering counterfeit items as long as you provide evidence that you destroyed said item. I really want to take advantage of that.

I personally found this thread very interesting because I have cautiously bought a number of things on EBay (incl a Gibson SG Supreme bass and a new Ric 4003) and have never ever had the slightest problem. I guess I've been very lucky up to now. I think other people's horror stories keep me vigilant.

I have seen a couple of things on EBay that obviously and definitely were not what they said they were - One custom / shaped guitar was claimed to have "belonged to a member of The Sweet", who when asked said he would never be seen with anything so vile. Another was being passed off as an "ex-Slade guitar". Again, no relation to the truth!

D Bopp has stuck right to the facts. The seller is identified in the EBay advert that's linked to in the first post. One to beware of.

As to whether D Bopp made any error in not checking out every nut bolt and screw of the bass - I guess he did. Saying that though, it's not a major blunder and it's probably one that any of us could make with a finger on the trigger on EBay. We are told one thing and something else is the truth.

I bet the first thing any of us do if we get a bass on Ebay is to examine every corner of the thing to look for dings that don't show up in the photos. This is just the same thing - the bass was sold as one thing and turned out to be something else - and it was spotted on that inspection.

At least D Bopp has hopefully made his money back on the sale of the bass. Nice one.

Agreed. I think he may have gotten a bit excited, but when when I see a good deal I jump too. There are guys on here who will tell you about great deals they got and they were legit (500 canadian dollar 80s ric in damn decent shape comes to mind). Yes, he should have done a little research, and I am certain that lesson has been learned, but no one has the right to misrepresent their product. The fact that he claimed he got ripped and then dissapeared is a clue that he was a scammer. Glad to hear the money came back. I do agree that Ebay is risky, and buyer beware applies, but that applies to the little sneaky things people do without lying. What this guy did was intentionally misrepresent his product and that is a crime.

And as for donate it to charity guy (not worth my time to quote it), that is without a doubt the dumbest post I have ever read.

I got ripped at Ebay once, Paypal never helped me, I had to look for fender expert, etc etc, spending even more money, I sent 'em pictures which showed that the guitar was not a real fender but a mightymite crap...they said no to refund. I found a professional guitar player who stated with his own name that this was not a Fender obviously. They said No. Really nice people at Payapal (ironic mode on),

Believe, no more chances for a second purchase at Ebay.

They said no to me. Now I say NO to 'em

Blame on Ebay, Paypal and all at this company... what a buyer protection! OMFG

seriously.. all he had to type was Invalid Link Removed and would have seen IMMEDIATELY it was Fender Japan bass..

I'm not the wisest guy in the world.. but I DO take responsibility for my actions and I DO bother to do the vaguest of research when I buy **** on line..

The seller of that Bass put everything there in the pictures.. And seeing the OP owns custom shop stuff, puts his opinions in on if Fender basses are legit or not in other threads.. ie, he seems to show a little bit of knowledge here..

I'm actually suspecting he knew all along it was not what the ad said.. The colour is wrong, the pickguard is wrong, there is no certificate (or mention of one), the case is wrong.. I mean, there is so much wrong here its not even funny..

Oh and its Mow as in Cow.. not mower..
And yeah I buy and sell a lot of gear too.. haven't been stung.. cos I DO MY RESEARCH..

One thing I can add objectively and without pointing fingers:

"If its too good to be true, it probably is."

The bass was a Buy it Now for $1200? That should have been a red flag. That's like $1000 off a normal price, yes?

While I agree about the research thing and the perils of a seller not being honest, this is completely not true. I have bought a masterbuilt precision for 1200 and also a fender custom shop flathead telecaster in mint condition for 650, both using buy it nows.

It's the buy it nows that actually yield the best deals, and really as displayed here there is some coverage when things go wrong. It's just a matter of know what to do when they do go wrong.

Lamar,

I agree. Sometimes you just have to jump when you can because the deal is too good to pass up. And with Paypal's Buyer Protection, it's hard to lose.

If this had been a REAL 51 CS, it would have been a STEAL at $1200. Fender made a 50th Anniversary 51-P RI, which I have unsuccessfully tried to get my hands on. Just for those interested, here's the major cosmetic differences between the CIJ and the 50th Anniversary:

1) The color and finish. The CIJ is a butterscotch yellow with a high-gloss poly finish. Compare with the CS:

Real CS with lighter-colored transparent nitrocellulose finish:

2) The Bridge. The CIJ has an all-metal bridge, which is disguised in this photo:

The REAL CS has wooden saddles:

csbridge.jpg

3) The pull-bar and ash-trays:

The CIJ comes equipped with NO pull-bar, but this one has what appears to be a black plastic one. In addition, the CIJ was not sold with the ash-trays.....they were added later.

The REAL CS has a light-colored wooden pullbar with 1 center screw.....although I have seen some with FLAT black pullbars:

4) Lastly, the REAL CS has a Custom Shop decal on the back of the headstock. This counterfeit has one as well:

It's obvious that whoever put the CS decal on the CIJ did it in order to deceive an unsuspecting buyer. Was it the eBay seller here? You can't be certain, but his actions are awful suspicious.

Glad you got a good resolution, D.

cos I DO MY RESEARCH..

and cos YOU GOT LUCKY.

The fact of the matter is, if I really wanted to be picky, I would say close to half of the ebay transactions I have been less than satisfactory in some way. Most cases, something being sold as "new" that clearly was not. Only one bad story that I won't bother to tell (and yes, paypal took care of it). But in all of the cases where things were amiss, there was really NO way to tell until you got the item.

You have to be able to trust the seller to some extent.

So you're point about being careful is noted and not with out merit... but your points that it's the buyer's responsibility to see through any and all attempts at fraud, or that the only reason that you haven't had issues is because your so damn good, are ignorant.

Completely false. The auctions are what usually yield the best deals. I buy and sell guitars and I buy them in auctions and then either sell them whole or in body/neck part and make ~75-100 a guitar. Buy it nows are overwhelmingly either sellers who know exactly what they're doing or sellers who just overprice everything.

Auctions always get regulated to somewhere near market value, that is what happens in the last minutes. Sweet deals on buy it now are bought within 5 minutes of their listing. I don't know how you can ever say you can get a deal as sweet as a 71 for 750 on an auction?

I clear 200 -1000 a guitar. And as stated I cleared 3500 on that private stock. You doing better than that?

You know very little about basic ebay economics. You are very correct - auctions get "market value". However, they don't get "book value". That's for the "Buy it Now." Auctions REGULARLY produce lower final values than their fixed-auction counterparts. This is due to:

1) the economy and its affect on a buyer's confidence and more importantly the buyer's pocketbook
2) the lack of demand for certain products that would otherwise command book value
3) variable factors involved with the listing itself (bad pictures, 4 a.m. listing time, bad description, lack of question answering)
4) the availability of buyers at the time the auction ends (i.e. Johnny might have bidded a bunch on it but he was at work)

"Buy it Now" auctions don't have the responsibility of having to handle any of these variables. Just because a few guys a week list their guitars way cheap doesn't mean the whole format itself is that way. "Buy it Now" auctions have the benefit of:

1) allowing the seller to price something at book value and wait for someone to come along who will buy it. A specific/maybe obscure color or model of guitar won't command as much in live auction because the 1 or 2 people who would pay $1000 for it aren't around to bid on it. Thus, it might only go for $700.
2) allowing the seller to decline bad offers and shoo away low prices by having a set price. If a guitar normally costs $1200 new but only goes for $700 new at auction, that leaves a $500 gap. You think people will never buy in that gap??? Sure they will!! But not in the auction. An ebay seller then goes and lists for $950. He might have to wait a couple times around and maybe lower it a few bucks but it will sell just the same - and will command a higher price.

I don't have thousands of dollars to invest (I'm a college student) or else I'd be making more. I have made up to $250 a guitar but that is half skill and half luck. Yes, if you're going to get a "Buy it Now" deal you have to be sitting and staring at ebay every minute of every day.

I've heard alot of ridiculous things in this forum (or any forum...for that matter) without any proof. You show me proof you're doing this and I'll consider your responses legitimate. Anyone can say they made $2000 doing anything on this thread. Who was the buyer? And who did you buy it from? Please post your ebay user-name so that we can verify this if we like. This ain't any different than the real world.

And also, I didn't come on here to argue with someone who's better at making money. I could care less. I was using my experience with ebay as proof that I may have at least some knowledge of the site and its comings-and-goings. Indeed, I also occasionally stop to verify the claims if tb's many users, as I am now. It makes the world cleaner and clearer to do so.

I'd say you insinuated a lot for someone to claim this. Nice one. There is a lot to address here, but not sure you are really wanting me to address it. Suffice to say, you claim I don't know jack about economics yet you think that blue book prices are relevant in this current economic weather? did I or ANYONE every say all buy it nows were better? That kind of implies that you would believe all auctions are better? Even if the opening bid is ridiculous? Remember, you are the one that said COMPLETELY FALSE.

Good luck.

EDIT: I forgot you were looking for proof on some deals. From my latest buyer account.
