My story in many ways is like a lot of other posts I've read this morning. Played when I was young, got back into it a year ago, started collecting, joined a band etc... I really enjoy playing bass and learning new things. A lot has changed since I first put down the cello and picked up a Bass in 1977. Wish I still had those basses. Glad I got new ones. Anyway, when I would search for new information, this forum kept coming up as search results. I liked reading the posts, I've always liked forums, the wisdom of crowds and all, and so I decided to join.
I have been fortunate enough to get adopted by a band that likes playing a little bit of everything-- blues, rock, country, but blues the most. We have our second gig coming up next Saturday. No one is quitting their day job, but we have a tremendous amount of fun. Nothing quite like 5 old guys rocking out. As most of you know, it is simply the best fun ever. Well, second best.
GAD is a much larger problem for me these days as opposed to when I was saving grass-cutting money to buy equipment. Recently, I added a bass that made the wife gasp when I told her the price. New Fender, the bass plays like butter. I have a hard time putting it down. I have a hard time taking it out of the house. I like them all though, in their own way. I haven't taken a lot of photos of my gear, but I will and I will share as I do.
Lastly, I find learning new techniques and songs to be much easier today than it was years ago. First, the internet-- nuff said. Second, iTunes or other music services. For those of you that didn't grow up in a world of tapes and albums, and paper music, you have been blessed. I can still recall, moving the needle back, over and over again, to try and rip off that lick that I wanted to learn. Probably Queen or Pink Floyd. I can remember when I finally got Money right. The Wall, well, I needed to by a second copy. Some things I never worked out. Now, one can just Google this or that, and after a couple of pages, a suitable starting point can be found.
Musical genres for me are Blues, Rock, Country, and Bluegrass. All that leads into some gospel playing at church. We did She Loves Me Like a Rock for Mother's day at church. Genius. I have become very fascinated with the bass player for Keb Mo. I have done a little Googling for more info on the subject, but little is out there. There also isn't a lot of Bass tabs for his music, but it is fairly traditional blues progressions, so learning by ear has been fun.
Well, that is more than I thought I'd write and hopefully less than what you are willing to read. I am looking forward to reading the posts of the experts in the room. I suspect I will write a few as well.
