I've been reading this forum for a few weeks now and just joined today. I'm from North Wales in the UK and started playing bass when I was 15 in 1994, joining a metal/rock band that my friends formed. This mutated into a covers band before it fell apart after a few years. I largely lost interest after that until a couple of years ago and started to play again, this time concentrating on fingerstyle and slap. I'm not all that good really but I do enjoy playing.
My current main bass is a Squier Precision Bass Special, the one with PJ pickups and a Jazz neck. It's cheap, but I like it and I've replaced the J pickup with a Quarter Pounder. Hopefully I'll be able to replace the P one too soon. A desire to experiment with fretless led to me getting a cheapo Encore P copy in November 06 and ripping out the frets before slapping on some filler and varnish. It's ugly, but it works well enough and is fun to play with. I also have my original Encore P copy, which I 'refinished'. It's intact and works, but it's not great.
Previously I have owned a 5-string Hohner B2V Steinberger copy (strung EADGB) stupidly traded for a red Westfield thing which was pretty in metallic red, but made of plywood - I eventually gave that to my nephew. Earlier this year I bought an AXL Tiger Pro 6 string on Ebay, which I hated and promptly sold - looking back I realise now it was suffering from bad wiring, old strings and a bad setup. I regret not giving it a better chance.
Originally I was influenced by metal bassists, and I still regard Steve Harris as one of my main ones, but recently I've started to look at the work of bassists such as Flea and John Entwistle.
In terms of GAS, I'd like a real Jazz bass, either a Fender or one built out of good parts. 8 and 12 string multiple course basses fascinate me, but I've never played one, and I'd love to try out an Ashbory some day.
