I started on a 5 string, so my learning curve was backwards. It's fun once you're accustomed to both though, and you can pick up a buddy's bass or any off the shelf and noodle around!

I totally disagree with this. It is the same design as a 4 string and it is not just about the 5 extra notes. It is also about the added versatility across the fretboard as well.

That's just me being flippant. Australian sense of humour.

I am also a 5 string fan.

Edit: But I was totally serious about drop tuning. I am a recent convert to drop tuning: all my 4 string basses are tuned normally, and my 5 string bass is permanently drop tuned to ADGCF. For me this creates a very clear distinction between 4 and 5 string basses. It's a great workout for the brain and the fingers. Only problem is avoiding the temptation to play low A (windows shaking etc.).
