I picked up a V4b in good shape for $250 a few months ago. Later '70s model. Had my tech do a cap job and put in some new JJ7027A's. Great amp! Plenty of power for what I need. I just wish the thing wasn't so wide so it would sit on my cab cleaner. They should have made it the same width as the V2.

Just picked up a 1970's ampeg v4-b and need some advice

I picked up an old B40 cab (basically a V4 cab with 10s in stead of 12s). I fixed it up and put some legends in it and it is tough to beat. It is a sealed cab so it does the Ampeg low-mid thing really well!

IMHO still the best bass amp ever made. I am on my second V4. foolishly traded my 1971 for a Sunn many years ago.
Used my first one with a 8 10 squareback and it sounded awesome.
New one sits on either 4 12 cab or 6 10. maybe even better than the 810. especially the 4 12

To tell you the truth, I think a V4B sounds better than a SVT.
At 100 watts it really needs more than 1 speaker for clear bass tonality; I used a 2x15.
It must kill with a 6x10.
Good on your tech for staying wth the 7027A's.

I think so too. I bought a 73 SVT when I had my first V4. I was expecting it to blow the V4 away. It didn't, but I kept it and sold the V4. I regretted it pretty much immediately and knew it was the amp for me. Sold the SVT for a B15. That didn't work, so sold B15 for a B25. None compared to that V4, so I bought the next clean v4 I came across, which is my V4B. Have had it recapped and retubed with USA tubes.
