Just picked up a 1970's ampeg v4-b and need some advice

I got the amp for 350 and it was still outputting sound but had a pretty horrible hum too it. Obviously a tube problem I'm hoping. I just picked up an american standard 2008 fender jazz as well. I'm planning on running the v4-b with the jazz bass through an svt 6x10.. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting a quote tomorrow on how much it should be to get the tubes replace and I'll post what they say about it tomorrow, but any and all advice or opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the heads up.. I dropped it off to a great tech in town today already. I should know what's wrong with it and how much he's offering to fix it for tomorrow morning. I need it done by thursday because I'm leaving for tour this weekend :(

I saw that on the back but since my other head is a SVT classic i have no ****ing clue what I'm doing with it so I didn't even dare touch it. Thanks for the head's up though, good to know..

If you run into widely different power from gig to gig and get some hum, just adjust it for the least or no hum from the speakers. You can't do any damage by adjusting it unless you have the volume up really high(speakers could take a hit if it gets too loud) Don't play while adjusting, just listen to the speakers with no signal going into the amp.

I just got it back from the shop today. He put a full set of 7027a's and fixed a few other things. I played it out of my svt 6x10 and was blown away at the range of sound I could get out of that amp. Goes from so clean to so ****ing punchy and dirty quickly and easily. I couldn't be happier.

Nice! Love my V4B, too. No amp gas for almost 4 years now! Bought it here in the classifieds, and it looks brand new almost. It's a '76 I believe.

You have a great rig that should inspire you for years and years!

Congrats! I recently got an early 70s one too. I posted it here and we couldn't verify the exact year (and I haven't opened it up to check the pot codes yet). Either way, they sound amazing to me! It is strong and clean! But of course you can make it dirty if you like. Enjoy it. It really is a great piece. Combined with a J and a 6-10 you should be smiling a lot.

i have a 73 V4B and I LOVE it! its such a killer sounding amp and dont let the 100W fool you. This Thing is LOUD! I play a pbass through it. Have fun :bassist:
